Am I using it wrong?
I finally decided to dust mine off since there's a few folks who seem to use it as their primary contact. But every time I have it running, it never says people are online. Doesn't say online, or offline, just a ? symbol. So I never know when anyone is around. So I never know when to say hi ;_;

It's a very silly program.
If you're seeing that grey '?' next to a name, I think it means you're not a mutual contact. Either the other person never authorized you or has deleted you from their contact list.
And I agree, I really don't much like Skype, but it seems to be inordinately popular ..
