Preparing for the End of the World

I've been curious of this for awhile, but what's the obsession with shows/movies/games that are about the end of the world?
Two of the best (if not the best) games from 2008 were Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3, but basically taking place after the fall of humanity. Next year'll follow with I Am Alive and probably a couple more that fit the genre.
Battlestar Galactica is possibly the best show on TV and there's less than 40 thousand humans left alive in the entire galaxy.
It's almost like we're psychologically preparing ourselves for the absolute worst possible scenario. Even though most people, even those who play these games, would totally freeze up if anything like this were to happen, is there some sort of solace to take place in maybe knowing something that could save your life once? Maybe putting yourself in these desperate situations make you think that things now aren't so bad?
It's one of the most depressing concepts imaginable, because there's no going back to a normal way of life in these stories. Even if society could be rebuilt, nothing would ever be the same again. A better question would be that is life even worth rebuilding, depending on how majorly things were fucked. Would we ever return to the standard of life we have now?
Or maybe it's just fun to have carte blanche on killing zombies.
