i normally add the belly lines as if i'm drawing flat lines on a round surface...so in a way it's guessing while also considering depth of field. Sorry if i'm no help.

That depends, some wants their belly stripes to be included as fat. Some don't.
You don't have to make them into individual bulges. It can just be there.

You could always try to use a different shade or color for the stripes than for the lines.

I think the way I've seen some people do it, is they just draw the belly round first, then the add in the lines, and add in the curves so it's going in and erase the flat belly.

Like draw the belly with a curve first. Then draw in the striated lines. Where the line meets the curve, erase that bit, and then connect the 2 parts of the curve to the striated line. x3

Here's what I usually do when I had a character with those.
The bigger I drew the character, I drew the belly first, then drew the lines second.. When they are more closer to the back, they are closer together, and when they are closer to the belly fat, they are drawn farther apart.

And while you shouldn't make each line a separate roll of fat, the fat parts should bulge slightly from the line itself, like the lines are little strings, and the fat is kinda overspilling them.
