This is the exact reason I stopped using the GIMP. The exact reason. Because once the image would get high enough, it would save and leave transparent blocks where there was information before. I had to resort to saving large jpg images of things and cropping them back into my image files.

I just cannot deal with this. I absolutely hate Corel and any other program, they're way too complex and annoying to use. This is the one program I can use and am good at, and it does this shit to me.

What's happening is that it goes back to the first time I saved it. Even if I save it after every brush stroke, it still goes back to the first time.

I'm tired of looking at the picture, I'm tired of having to restart, I'm tired of having to deal with this.

I totally understand what you mean. I also did this thing with mine where i would go to 'save file as' and save the .xcf file with another number after it. That way I always have a copy to revert back to.

But I totally get why you're upset. Completely.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I know how *frustrating* it is to lose so much time and effort. The best thing to do at a time like this is rage and cry and throw things. Then eventually calm down. Then you'll see if you decide you want to keep doing digital work or not. It may be a while before you feel like it again.

If you ever do continue, you should look into using a different program~ Because that shit is messed up.

Sorry that's happening to you, it really sucks. I stopped using Corel because it was so complicated and kept crashing, now I use SAI. I haven't done much with GIMP, but it's screwed me over a few times. Your art is beautiful, it's a shame you won't be doing pieces any time soon. I sincerely hope you get past your frustration and maybe find a program that doesn't do that.

Oh gaw, that is the worse feeling, I've had simlar things happen on my old computer. Maybe your version of GIMP is old and poops with your computer or when you downloaded it perhaps somehting didn't install correctly?

I dunno. I think perhaps my little Netbook can't handle working with that sort of thing. As for installing.. I've reinstalled it several times since it first happened, so I'm not sure what could have gone wrong unless the topmost source has something wrong with it.

It's a netbook? Yeah, that's your problem. Judging by your art you probably do your pieces huge and at a really high resolution, right? It probably doesn't have enough memory.

Fuck gimp though, even if it's crashing it shouldn't be reverting to earlier saves. Get yourself a better computer (desktop- you can get a decent one for $300 and a top of the line gaming rig for $900) and use SAI or photoshop CS3 or 4 (not 5, it has issues with crashing and doesn't really have any better features than 4).

Seriously, people don't realize how inexpensive a good desktop is because laptops are so popular. You're looking at 1/2 to 1/4 of the cost, and if you need it for commissions, it will probably pay for itself pretty quickly.

Of course if you just decide to go back to traditional that's your choice, and I wouldn't blame you. I mostly use paper and pencil too, which is why there's next to nothing in my gallery. I just want to help you out if you want to keep trying with computers, I'm pretty good with them.

Well I have three desktops. ^^; I am a very particular person, and I cannot do artwork in my living room with my hectic annoying family all around me. The whole reason I have a laptop was to /not/ use a desktop. I know they're better. xD But you couldn't have known that, so I definitely don't blame you for letting me know!

As for the memory usage, I'm using an external hard drive. I have nothing at all saved on my computer except for my desktop background. XD So I can only imagine that GIMP and my computer combined just can't handle the immense size of the picture.

I've always focused on traditional, and lord knows I'm much better at it, but I wanted to extend my skills. And I don't get many commissions for traditional art, so I kind of /had/ to upgrade so I can make money.
