Egypt as it was before this was still pretty dangerous. People see a tourist, they think, "Hey, if we kidnap this person, their family will send us a ton of money to release them."

I don't know. That might not work here. Things like the Sphinx? The pyramids? Not only are they treated with a certain..... unquestioned reverance... even in islamic texts.. (all men fear the passage of time.. but time fears the pyramids.. Islamic proverb) But they are....... centralistic to the Egyptian identity.. You would have bloodshed in the streets if they decided to destroy them........ More importantly.. If it came out that they were planning to destroy the monuments.. Maybe not the us.. But someone would go to war with them over it.

The one thing i find saddest...... It was said that there would be a vast trove of knowledge found between the paws of the sphinx..... and judging by echo imaging there IS something down there...possibly a natural cavity, or maybe something more..... but now there is a chance we will never know...

Today's breed of Islamist Extremists, however, think nothing beyond the Quran's teachings is worth preserving, and would likely be the first to call for the Sphinx' destruction, if they had the power to do so.

They barely even consider the Quran at all. They just use it as a prop to dupe people into thinking they're motivated by something other than their own lust for worldly power.

And there you are. That is the problem. Comparing muslims to the farce that takes place in some of the larger middle eastern countries is like comparing Christianity to the holy roman empire as it existed in the dark ages and through the crusades, or for that matter, Salem. It isnt really fair to judge the nature of a faith by the worst parts of its history, even if that is modern history.. Religion is, i fear, by its very nature evil... and will always be so. Faith, is not evil. Hope, is not evil. Being a christian, a muslim, a jew, a shintoist (?) what ever, is not evil... It is when you organize and start saying that everyone else is wrong and there for must be destroyed, THAT is evil. If Moses, Jeshua, Mohamed...maybe not Buddha, but generally, all of the major religious figures, were alive today, and got together for a chat, they would issue this statement.

"God help us, our followers are fools and lunatics"

I fear you put up a very solid argument, one I'm not willing to contest at all, but I gotta say this:

Most religions are founded on good intent, and those that believe in those intentions, I would say, are the ones I see as true Christians, Muslims, Jews, Mormons, and anything else except Scientologists. Every major faith says how bad it is to invoke wrath upon another person, or go even a far as to kill someone. When you see people killing in the name of their patron deity, whom would disapprove strongly if they existed, I gotta say that they're not a member of their supposed faith at all, just terrorists and/or heretics.

And the history... all that precious knowledge... gone... just like that... I grew up learning about all of those artifacts, I even have a miniature library of books dating back to the 1930s dedicated to Ancient Egypt... A piece of me just died inside when I saw the footage of the ransacked museum...

mmmmmm... As i said. I have no problem with any specific religions... but really... the government could save a lot of money spent on weapons development just by hiring engineers. All that you need to do is build a four walls around the circumference of the middle east.. And then fill it with water. And finally.. there will be peace in the middle east. Following a brief, but epic pool fight...

This makes me very sad. I would have thought the museum would be one of the top priorities for the Egyptian army to protect.

It is being protected now, both by the military and a 'human chain' of civilains.

damn. fuck the muslems who destroy such history and art like the buddha statues. seeing and hearing of it's destruction was the first time i ever felt hate for a religious minority (regardless of the fact their religion teaches that kind of action). if that were to happen to what little is left of egypt, all hell would break loose in my soul as i would want nothing more than to see those people dead. the current egyption government is already keeping so much secret about the ancient culture there, but that's better than having nothing to see at all.

One of the reasons the Egyptian people are rebelling against Mubarak is because his government had no respect for the nation's heritage or people... if it wasn't directly tied to keeping Mubarak in absolute power it was treated as irrelevent. That's why Mubarak's own 'police' are being accused by protestors of carrying out the vandalism.

After word reached the general public about what happened to the museum, protestors themselves created a human chain around it until the military arrived to create a perimeter.

I've actually been following this very closely for the past week, and I can tell you things our American media are saying are horridly skewed.

First off about the museum: It is a terrible tragedy. However, they did catch people who were stealing mummy skulls, and who were looting and causing chaos all over the country. A disgusting FACT (yes it is confirmed fact now) is that most of the looters are police, and are carrying police ID.

As far as the government change, the Egyptian people are fighting not only to get Mubarak out of power, but to elect their own government. They don't want anybody just stepping in or taking over. They want to choose who is in power, they want a real democracy.

If you are interested in the facts and breaking news as it happens, check out Al Jazeera. They are a wonderful news source out of Cairo. Their cameras were shut down by Mubarak,'s police a few hours ago, but they still have previous footage, and they have current breaking news in audio. One pleasant thought: the people of Egypt are PROUD of their history, and when rioting and fires broke out, CITIZENS formed a blockade to protect the Cairo museum.

Yes, this is completely true. The people who broke into the Cairo museum managed to get in through the roof, and were caught on their way out the doors.

There was no destruction is the name of a cause. The police are going in and doing this to make the protesters seem reckless and wild. Most of the looters and thugs they have found stealing and beating up people in their homes have police IDs on them.

Interesting, I wonder if a new govt becomes extremist, would they start artillery shelling and dynamiting the pyramids too?

Seems historical treasures are safer in Europe and other stable countries, maybe they should start exporting the stuff now to save what is left so anything that can be saved is saved.
