Gays and the Film Industry..

For long as I've lived.. I have had hatred against the stereotyping and prejudice. Who is with me? Why do Gay people have to always either be comical, cowardice or anti-heroes.. Why can't they be the main characters? Why do gay actors have to stay in the closet just because their agents think coming out is suicide career-wise.. Isn't pride what we stand for!? Is staying closeted showing the world that it's okay to be queer!? Why stay closeted? Because the mainstream audience is homophobic and keep running to their religions and governments for all the "Righteous" reasons that's why.. If I'm going into the Film Industry, I'm doing it with open arms.. And I will do it, first step of my career, by outing myself! It's time to stop this ignorance and suffering.. Just as Gandhi said.. We are strong.. "First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you.. Then you win!!!" Noone gets left out of this anymore... NOONE! >:(

I hope this gives some insight, I'm not entirely sure what it was you was asking, but hope this small part of Skunky knowledge helps.
The Steve Harvey show is well written, but white people didn't watch it demographics show. It's possible they didn't think it was representational of real life. How could a black man do so well for himself? Or maybe Normal, Ohio with John Goodman, in which he played a gay man who was straight except for liking men:O. Not very well written, but the premise was widely derided as not being true to life. How could a gay not be obsessed about fashion, how can he not be gym fit and hairless, what the heck is a bear!?
Flimsy gay sells, masculine does not. Like it or not the stereotypes exist and are used as guides. It's a cultural thing in the US to be taught that irish people are drunks and darker skin means foreigner. A newly moved here white kiwi (i don't remember if that is offensive) is less foreign than a white Cuban who family came here in the 1950s and speaks no spanish nor even knows how to cook the foods of their parent's culture.
There's also the issue of credibility. Can you make a film about straight people when you are not so? They will skewer you for such things. I really don't think sex has a bearing on what type of art can be created nor any sexuality. Thus I don't care if it is a gay director or a straight one. It really doesn't affect the work unless they choose to make it an issue.
I feel like it should be more "great director" rather than "great straighty director" or "great gay director". Why is the gay so important? How would it make you a better director than someone else? It's a small aspect of a person unless they choose to engage in gay culture, then it's a completely different game
