OK, THIS one I haven't run before. I think. The TV station once ran a live-action intro for the Captain Iceland show. I was beardless then, so I landed the role of the Captain. Great fun! Alas, all I got left from that suit is the bowler hat (not shown in photo). Hmmmm...where DID the costume go? I loved that rich blue cape...

Well, aesthetically, it gives a good fulcrum point for the.. uhh.. balance of the varying colors in the costume? ... Okay, I have no idea how to put what I'm thinking into words. :D
But like, let's look at Captain Iceland there. Without the red underwear. he'd just be all white with red boots and gloves. You'd have all the red points in the costume concentrated at these opposite ends, adding a lot of... a lot of, uhh... color "weight".
But when you put some more red between that, in the form of an "underpants" design, it evens things out and the color "weight" is now better distributed.
