Through my momma and daddy...(both born and raised in South Carolina, moved down to Florida to have me and stayed there under the iron fist of Orlando and it's old, blind farts...iddly)
And with the words from mah mouth. (I really do not believe suh, or madam, that my "yeh'all" means the same as YOUR "Y'all". If you can't pronounce the way my people say it, don't try. The Latinos have been trying to teach us this lesson for years. Please learn it, already.)

The Egyptians and Barbaros tribes of Africa, Moors of the Middle East, Huns of Mongolia(China), Romans of Italy [and the Catholic Church as we know it], and the Greeks [spartans, duh?] invented shit like slavery and caste systems. Southerners' ancestors (Celts and Gaels and some Native American tribes: Irish and Scots and yeah, some of us have direct lines to Native American roots) were never really that big on the idea. To our ancestors it didn't serve much of a purpose. Once your people became yankees, and us a bunch of "Dumb Hicks" the dependency that YOU pushed on us to have slaves, and ultimately turned us into scapegoats and devils, we were pretty much screwed indefinitely.)

I'm reminded of that scene in "Gettysburg" where Longstreet is talking to the British officer--
Longstreet: "Aah, we shoulda freed the slaves, THEN fired on Ft. Sumter."
British officer: "Wut?"
External ignorance of the South is one reason I can't watch movies and TV shows about it without cringing. People in Hollywood and NYNY are uninterested in getting accents right. And nobody seems to have noticed that public policy here has changed since 1965. Those people don’t know important facts like:
--the difference between you all and you uns
--the 100,000 Southern hillbillies that fought for the Union
--the non-English speaking tribesmen that fought for the South, and all those black Indians you meet nowadays
--the fact that you can pray in a mosque or buy hindu idols in just about every big Southern town
--a reason Midwesterners were irritated enough to fight in the War (Southerners stole their export corridor)
--the existence of higher education in the South (no, really)
--Atlanta is different from Georgia or the South in general
On the other hand, there's this phenomenon I've noticed time after time, when many of my anglo co-workers tell me in private what they think of NEGROES. After working with them for a couple of weeks, they tell me that NEGROES (and MEXICANS) are the reason “everything is falling apart”. I don't spew my opinions right back at them, because there's no point trying to change people's minds by direct opposition. Also, I know why they have these thoughts: they get them from politicians who use economic issues to divide the races, and from news organizations that sell their product with scary images.
These anglos--many of whom are friends of mine--don't have black friends or neighbors. They don't go to anime conventions and see the most interracial blend of young civilians since they quit having white slaves on plantations. They don't read, and live in what I call chronological provincialism…they’ve never gone anywhere outside of the time limits of, say, the Disco Era to today. They get History Lite from the Hitler Channel—better than nothing, but not the place where you’ll get a well-rounded knowledge of the past.
They identify with the values of the ruling class—I mean the 1% of super-rich Americans—because they have been convinced that everything will collapse if they connect with other people in their community for mutual betterment. They fear that investing in their own community will result in their money being taken and given to NEGROES and MEXICANS. Who will then stick in their daughters’ poopers. They are already poor, but refuse to examine why they have to work so long and hard, and live so deep in debt, just to keep from being homeless. They can be dear friends, but they’re deeply stupid people.
There’s a lot of non-stupid, non-bigoted anglos around here, too. Just not enough to win elections. The good news in Texas is that anglos are no longer more numerous than all the non-anglos combined. Look for more attempts to get minorities to mistrust and hate each other (they’re already very skilled at that themselves). The ruling 1% of the wealthiest people have nothing to disturb their peace of mind.

Well......I don't know about you, sir, but I have to admit I'm a little homophobic (I had an incident a long time ago, don't ask).
And usually, the people whom you see or talk to who ask you such things are, guess what?....Direct descendants of only one or two generations of former northern folk. Norther folk who were the bane of where they came from originally and escaped to the south because they hated people constantly calling them out and putting them in their place. Trust me, real souther people who have had southern ancestors going back a good eight or nine generations would have kept their mouths shut and been polite, regardless of their beliefs.
As for the rest of 'em who are about....what?....between five and one generations in, they were from up top like ah said. They didn't come off the boat and settle in from the Virginia and South Carolina ports. They were either Dutch, French, Canadian or Watered-Down English immigrants who came into the country long AFTER, or RIGHT in the middle of the Revolutionary War through the northern ports like New York or New Hampshire, or some other New England area, got tired of being persecuted by the more intelligent people there-abouts for embarrassing everybody in front of good company and moved down south to stake their claims in new territories. Something akin to my mother's family, for example. Thank goodness I have my father's genes. Having Native American Tribesman in your blood and good Irish and Scottish morals and values help neutralize the bad blood. It makes me hate people more individually and for their character, not for their customs or culture, or as a group. I don't say things like "some niggers should be shot." I say things like "Niggers should stop making Black people look bad. Rap ain't art, makin' a dude hate you is not a good thing, and disrespecting all forms of authority, benevolence and honor should deserve a severe pimp slapping! Especially by either a Black pimp, woman, teacher, parent, or most definitely, a black preacher!" and "Niggers are not all black people, they are supposed to be just the white trash of black people. Hence the real reason why black people do not like being called that word." and my personal favorite "Niggers, Arrogant Latinos and Stupid, White racist turds are the reason why Black and Asian comedians will never run out of material."
I could give less of a damn if Mexicans or any other Spanish slang-speaking peoples were coming into the country, I just hope they do it legally and safely. It's just damn stupid to cross a nation's border illegally and not expect consequences. They should be glad they weren't trying to break into France. Those French police officers would have a fucking field day with them.
