Hot under the Collar
Chapter Two: Cutey Punny – Cautious Critic.
Cutey Punny continued to walk closer and closer to the source of the alluring melody, completely under its soothing spell, oblivious to anything else. She was not alone in her overjoyed, entranced state; the Pokemon that had made this part of the forest their home were also enthralled by the never-ending musical display. In a similar, almost identical fashion to the mentally fallen hero, the Pokemon had swirling red spirals instead of normal pupils with their arms, wings or whatever appendage accustomed to their species held out in front of them.
Up ahead was a large clearing with a huge, sparkling blue lake in the shape of an oval. In the middle was a small island where a stunningly beautiful Dragonair was playing a golden harp, as big as she was. The silver strings glimmered majestically with each perfected stroke, the produced music soothing to the ears. The Dragonair had her eyes closed, her mouth curled up into a relaxed smile. It paid no notice to the entranced Pokemon entering the surrounding waters to swim towards it, preferring to focus and enjoy its comforting music.
The first one to the island was Cutey Punny. Her arms went from a forward stroke motion to a zombie-like position as soon as she could stand. She travelled the short distance up the miniature steep to sit down by the Dragonair’s side, her arms finally getting a well deserved rest as she placed them by her sides. Cutey Punny was eventually joined by the rest of the Pokemon, each one as equally as content and as hypnotized.
The Dragonair opened her eyes half way and looked at the super heroine. “Well, well, this is unexpected,” she commented softly to herself, “I never thought the famous Cutey Punny was venturing in my neck of the forest.” While still keeping up a rhythm on her harp, the Dragonair gently wrapped her top half around Cutey Punny, giving her a comforting squeeze and friendly smile. “Cutey Punny, do you enjoy my marvellous melody?”
“Yes, I do,” Cutey Punny responded, followed up by a tranquil sigh, “you are the mistress of the musical arts.”
The snake-like dragon chuckled, appreciating the compliment. “Why, thank you. The word ‘mistress’ has a nice ring to it.” she said, “from this point on, you shall call me ‘Mistress Melody’ in exchange for my music.”
“Yes, Mistress Melody, I will do whatever you say just to hear more of your wonderful music,” Cutey Punny proudly proclaimed, smiling widely.
“You are such a loyal fan, Cutey Punny,” Melody the Dragonair remarked with delight, giving the mesmerized rabbit a rewarding squeeze. “I assume the rest of you are in agreement?” she asked, glancing over at the others.
“Yes, Mistress Melody!” the rest exclaimed in merrily in unison. “We will do anything you want just to hear more of your magnificent song!”
Melody’s smile broadened in satisfaction. “I am so grateful that I have such a large variety of obedient admirers,” she observed in delightful, eyeing each and every one of them, stopping at an Oshawott. “I regret to inform you that my tail tires.” After this statement, Melody abruptly unwrapped herself from around Cutey Punny to lunge at the small Water-Type, mouth wide open. In one greedy gulp, the unfortunate Oshawott disappeared in an instant, becoming a budge in Melody’s elegant skin as he slid down into the stomach. “Oh, pardon me,” she apologized, smiling angelically. “My hunger spasms are somewhat uncontrollable at times.”
“We forgive you, Mistress Melody,” Cutey Punny and her blissfully unaware company responded, “We are still, and forever will be, grateful for your lovely harp playing.”
“It is time for you all to rest those eyes and ears of yours, my faithful fans,” The Dragonair announced, her tail gradually moving away from the harp strings after playing one final note. “Everyone bar from Cutey Punny shall fall into a heavenly slumber to dream of being held lovingly in your mistress’s tail,” she ordered, placing her treasured instrument to one side, watching everyone, apart from Cutey Punny, progressively drift happily into a deep sleep. “When my music graces your ears once more, you shall immediately awake to worship my remarkable talent.”
“Yes, Mistress Melody,” the sleepy bunch drowsily responded before falling asleep.
With everyone else fast asleep, Melody turned her full attention to Cutey Punny. She wrapped herself around the Lopunny, gracing her with a snug squeeze. “I may seclude myself in this forest, Cutey Punny, but I have heard a lot about your noble activities,” she admitted, rubbing her head affectionately against Cutey Punny’s face. “You are a keeper that much is for sure,” Melody’s tail orbs started to mysterious glow a subtle pink. “That is why I must do what I am about to do.”
Cutey Punny murmured, the spirals in her eyes beginning to deplete due to the absence of the alluring melody pleasuring her eardrums. Melody was none the wiser as she placed her tail orbs up against the heroine’s forehead.
“I want you as my pet, Cutey Punny. I want to pamper you and treat you with the love and respect you deserve,” Melody declared with a wide, serene smile. “I am afraid I must mess with your mind to take our your heroic, albeit reckless nature, but it is necessary for the new role you must fulfil.”
Upon hearing the sneaky Dragonair’s plan, Cutey Punny instantly regained her free will and snapped back to reality. The aspect of being a mindless pet to someone so sinister made her blood boil.
“If you think I will become your pet, Melody, you are sadly mistaken!” Cutey Punny angrily stated, unleashing a powerful Shock Wave. It may have not been super-effective, but it was enough to make Melody release the enraged rabbit from her loving grasp.
“Impossible!” Melody exclaimed, a worried facial expression overlapping her calm nature. “Despite the lack of my hypnotic music, you should still be as happy and loyal as a Growlithe!”
“The only reason I fell prey to your siren song was because I originally felt no danger from it,” Cutey Punny explained, taking out her sabre to point at the shocked dragon. “I order you to wake up these Pokemon and snap them out of your dastardly spell!”
Melody growled “How dare you to order me to disband my adoring fanbase, you ignorant cretin!” she yelled, swinging her tail at her. “If there is one thing I cannot tolerate, it’s novice critics!”
Cutey Punny nimbly evaded the tail attack by hopping over it. “Your music may be pure and innocent, but your intentions sure as hell aren’t!” she shouted. “Your sinister musical antics end here, Melody!” Cutey Punny valiantly proclaimed while stealthily rolling under a second tail attack and jumping to her feet to deal a significant sabre slash to the harp’s strings, cancelling the evil Dragonair’s mind-awing performance.
“Noooo!” Melody wailed, distraught. “You are no more than a philistine!” She attempted to smack Cutey with her tail, but it was swiftly evaded. “Who on this earth can praise such a vile creature with such high regards?!”
In response, Cutey Punny dealt a finishing blow to the Dragonair with her sabre, ending the battle with one last scream from Melody. Due to the benevolent nature of the weapon, Melody fell into an unconscious state with no scars to bear. Not wanting to leave the innocent Pokemon with Melody, Cutey Punny nudged each one awake. Luckily, they had snapped out of their trance and looked around, confused on their current location. Cutey Punny watched in satisfied happiness at the Pokemon swimming back to the shore before departing in different directions to continue their usual lifestyle.
“It’s a shame your intentions were insincere,” Cutey Punny said to the unconscious Dragonair as she started to slowly walk away. “For what it’s worth, you are an exceptionally talented musician.”
Cutey Punny swam back to the other side and headed into the forest, maintaining her patrol. She hoped that no further adversary would be able to mentally capture her through any sort of trickery. As the heroine ventured on, a tuxedo-wearing Meowth, the same one from before, stepped out from behind a tree, grinning in glee at Cutey Punny.
“Ah ha, I should have known better to doubt my precious beloved!” he commented. “Just you wait, my dear Cutey Punny, soon you’ll meet someone worth your time...and love...”
The Meowth gave a happy sigh as his tainted mind pictured all sorts of scenarios of what he would do when the masked heroine was finally in his grasp. He could still see the way Cutey Punny jiggled her butt to the beat of Melody’s hypnotic music. His trail of thoughts was cut short when he heard footsteps approach from behind him. He looked over his shoulder and put on a displeased expression before facing forward again.
“It’s a good thing that the Dragonair distracted my beloved long enough for you two fools to prepare yourself,” he said to whoever was behind him, his voice subtly transforming into a growl. “It’s your fault she got as close to Cutey Punny as she did! On top of all that, I nearly had to reveal myself to her which would have ruined my plans! She has almost finished her patrol and I cannot wait any longer! I want her today and I want her now!”
The Meowth angrily stamped his foot, causing the two figures to frantically stumble around and accidently bump into one another. After gathering up their bearings, they left the area in search of the unsuspecting masked Lopunny.
Elsewhere, Cutey Punny was reaching the perimeter of the forest that would finally lead into a town where she would end her daily patrol. She let out a prolonged yawn; the aftermath of being Melody’s hypnotic pawn for just a small period of time finally catching up with her.
“Ugh... Now I think I know what a hangover feels like...,” Cutey Punny crudely groaned, rubbing her weary eyes. “It’s a good thing I'm nearly home... As soon as I step in the door I'm taking off this disguise, hoping in the shower and going straight to bed..."
Unfortunately for her, she may not get the chance to even leave this troublesome forest. A nearby bush had started to rustle wildly, putting her on alert, sabre at the ready. Despite a strong wave of tiredness washing over her, she managed to maintain her active composure, tightening her grip on her weapon.
“Who is there?” the heroic rabbit shouted, quickly losing her patience. “Show yourself!”
After another stage of foreboding shaking, the bush stopped and a bizarre Pokemon hopped out. It had the size and shape of an Electabuzz, the colouring and patterns of a Kecleon and the tail of a Mantine. Its eyes were a spine-tingling shade of white. Cutey Punny’s eyes widened in utter shock as the freakish hybrid let out an unnatural screech.
“I must be dreaming!” Cutey Punny exclaimed, her jaw dropping in awe.
The beast charged at the Lopunny, its pudgy arm winding up for an exaggerated punch. Cutey Punny shook her head, snapping out of her stunned daze and cart-wheeled to the side just in time as the monster’s fist smashed into the ground.
“No! I can’t let its appearance get to me!” the heroine said to herself. “Whatever this monstrosity of a Pokemon is, I cannot allow it to get the upper hand over me!”
With a second abnormal roar, the mindless amalgam jumped at Cutey Punny, its arm going into a wind-up motion once again. Fully prepared for a repetitive assault, she leaped over it and blasted it in the back with her Charge Beam. The eyesore of a creature instantly swirled around, seemingly unfazed by Cutey Punny’s electrical retaliation and swatted her out of the air like some bothersome fly.
“This isn’t good!” Cutey Punny worryingly commented, jumping up to her feet. “Usually my Charge Beam packs a lot more punch than that!”
Keeping up with its gratuitous performance, the hybrid charged at its Lopunny target, growling like nothing she had heard before. Cutey Punny let out his own, more natural growl; the most recent events grading on her nerves.
“I am seriously getting sick of this!” Cutey Punny yelled, lunging at the beast with an outstretched out and striking him with a Jump Kick.
However, Instead of knocking the abomination away with her unforgiving kick, her leg went straight into its body, becoming stuck. As typical of its already anomalous manifestation, there was no blood for the hybrid to shed, only a trickle of what appeared to be green paint.
“Paint?” The flabbergasted rabbit gasped out loud. A realization was swift to dawn on her, along with a frown. “I should have known...”
The paint-filled monster roared and readied its fist only for it to be cut in half by a quick slash of Cutey Punny’s sabre. A spurt of green paint spewed out from the wound. As is flailed around in pain, the masked Lopunny kicked herself free and dealt a second blow to the wailing monster, slicing it in half with ease.
A fountain of Kecleon coloured paint burst out of the wobbling torso, splattering everywhere, even on Cutey Punny, much to her disgust. The upper half of the monster lay silent on the grass, melting into a pool of green paint, followed by the rest of its body.
“Now I REALLY need a shower,” Cutey Punny solemnly commented, sighing.
“You never did appreciate ze fine arts,” a voice with a thick French accent spoke out. “Though I do admit, that was not my best work.”
A Smeargle walked out from behind a tree, grinning widely and sinisterly at the paint-dripping heroine. It was wearing a black beret, a black bandana, a black cape along with a white eye mask; similar to Cutey Punny’s only wider and a pair of white boots. Around the Pokemon’s neck was a familiar accessory – a mesh collar, exactly the same as the one the crazy, cliché-spewing Unfezant was wearing.
“What underhanded plan are you scheming this time, Federico?” Cutey Punny inquired with serious intent. “I had no idea creating freaks of nature was the latest art trend!”
“Ah ha, you are joking, no?” Federico chortled, giving his cape a stylish swish. “That was, ‘ow you say it, a trial. Only zee true masterpieces will send you to your demise, you pestering, uncultured Lockpin!”
The Smeargle whipped out a blank canvas and hastily painted a picture of a Blaziken wearing traditional Japanese samurai armour wielding a sword with his tail. The detail was remarkable, even to the eyes of the anxious Cutey Punny, showing off a true sign of talent, albeit mixed with diabolical intentions.
“You are awestruck, are you not?” Federico smugly questioned, swinging his tail around, smirking proudly. “That is ‘ow it must always be. To marvel at ze best painter in ze region with ze respect I deserve!”
Federico laughed evilly as his work of art began to glow brightly. The image of the Blaziken samurai was completely engulfed in the mysterious glow, shrinking into a tiny hovering orb. All of a sudden, the orb exploded, destroying the canvas and sending out a gush of wind. When the light finally subsided, the Blaziken samurai was standing over the remains of the broken canvas; it’s dead, emotionless eyes staring directly at Cutey Punny, brought to life and ready to obey its deceitful artist.
