This is Jessica, the incredibly lovely lady I found at three in the morning in the middle of the road a night or so before a hard freeze. I took her in because she was in my path, however I was happy to see such a fine toad and thought to keep her for a little while.
our neighborhood has very few toads, and it wasn't rainy or anything the night I found her so to see such a large lady was odd to me.
she's currently munching crickets and the occasional waxworm, her tank is being renovated and I'm moving her into a 40 tall with a small breeding pool for later in the year, as well as setting up a 5gal planted bowfront for the few offspring I decide to keep. excess eggs/tadpoles/babies will be set free behind a local garden center that has toads (and snakes) of their own. and then after this years toadlets are large enough, (they will be separated once they become terrestrial and start eating insects) I'll pick out the prettiest ones and set up a rack for them. I don't know why but I really want to breed toads. they are somewhat common, but I've seen some really nice ones.
this is kinda my toad project, and I honestly don't think I'll be selling them or anything, but at least it'll be nice to document some of the natural variation in the species, and I get to have a bunch of fat toads :3c it'll be cool because I plan o raising flies, crickets and mealworms as it is and they eat literally everything that fits in their faces.
I really can't wait for it to warm up enough for the majority of the toads to be out, as I really want one in cream, one in clay red, and one in black! If I find an albino it would be awesome, as one was spotted around here once-but I don't think my chances are too hot, hypermelanistic ones pop up occasionally though, and a neighbor caught a piebald once. relevant topic: the coolest colors you've seen on a southern toad (Anaxyrus terrestris)
