"T-thanks again for spotting me bus fare, man. You didn't have to."
The elephant shivered slightly from the sudden cold of the bus' air conditioning. "I can't believe I left all my stuff in the back of coach's truck."
Books, change of clothes, even his glasses; he'd forgot them all in the duffel bag he had left in the truck when he rode to practice. All he had were the clothes he had changed out of earlier; a baggy pair of jeans and the emergency contact lenses he kept in his locker.
"It's okay, John," the fox said in response. "I've got a pass for myself anyway and I live in the same 'hood. No problem." The bus was filling with people who spent a late day on campus. Guys and girls of all makes, the small talk started overtaking the hum of the engine. The elephant stood up so other people could sit.
"Is that Johnathan Groundswell?" the fox overheard. Girls were sitting a few rows behind them, beginning to speak without knowing how loud they actually were.
"No way, that can't be him. That nerdsquach isn't that hot! Look at that guy! It must be Adam." the fox grit his teeth.
"No, Adam never filed his tusks down. It can't be him. Maybe this guy doesn't go here... I can't believe I thought he was Johnathan!" His knuckles clenched.
"He's a total smoking hottie, though!" The fox glanced over at his friend. She was right. But the way they talked about him...
His expression was almost zen.
"Kels, it's alright. I don't really like the attention anyway." Johnathan smiled.
"Off the field, at least. I'm fine with everyone thinking I'm just some huge awkward geek."
Adam's twin brother Johnathan is MVP of Ebony Cove U's football team, but his personality is completely different on and off the field, so most of the time people don't even know that the Jonathan "Goggles" Groundswell in their class and the "Mighty" Johnny Groundswell on the gridiron are the same person.
Johnny only finds his confidence on the field, where he can smash everyone and win; off it he's meek, introverted and is a total nerd. He even dresses in baggy layers to people can't equate his appearance.
