Well, it's hard to talk about flexibility.
What it does, and does best, is simulate very nicely some aspects of real paint, such as not only "bristle" or "brush" but even some actual physics of paint such as thickness/spread or dillution(though that may go in thickness).
This was done in a single layer, in any ways.
