I'm working on a new hand-puppet. The body is mostly made of closed-cell foam - strengthened with webbing - and glued together with hot glue.

Closed-cell foam - is that like or unlike upholstery foam? I ask, because I had a vaguely similar project trying to reproduce a fraggle, and the result was okay, but I wasn't sure I was using or sculpting the best possible foam for the job. Some of the foams I was using did not like hot glue one bit...
In a closed-cell foam, the gas forms discrete pockets, each completely surrounded by the solid material. A camping mat is an example of a closed-cell foam: the gas pockets are sealed from each other, and so the foam cannot soak up water or sweat.
I used a cheap camping mat - glued together with high temperature hot glue.
