Another Cave, Another Glowy Rock
I'm still refining and tweaking Three's generic fantasy outfit. There's a magic sword and sorcery world that she spends about two centuries in. I have about three stories from this world and who knows how many short stories. And always the generic non fire light source are little glowy rocks.
My current thought is that they're actually very porus translucent rocks that have had a brightly glowy type of lichen encouraged to grow in them. At night you wrap them in cloths soaked with water and fertilizer They're man made and need to be tended to regularly to keep them bright, plus they don't provide any warmth. But it's easier to manage than having to constantly feed a burning torch.
