To me, it just doesn't seem like a Disney cartoon? I was really surprised it was. Don't get me wrong, I do actually like Disney cartoons, but the humour is just really different, one not everyone can like and I personally find teens and young adults might like it more then kids would, but that's just me. Not saying all kids wouldn't, just sort of a majority.

I dunno, I find she is a main character, she's his twin after all. She may not be as main as a "narrator" which is more what Dipper is, but I wouldn't consider her a side character. Actually, having a more cool headed main character can keep the storyline in check, while Mabel would be way too hyper and random.
