I was kinda inspired by a friend recently to actually start WRITING some of my stories down. I wasn't so sure of myself, so I decided to do an experimental short story and see how things went. So, this is my first full length short story. It's 6 chapters long, plus Prologue and Epilogue. I'll be posting each new chapter at LEAST every week. The current rating is tame, but it'll get far more messy fairly soon. Comments are appreciated.
Prologue:
“So?” Said a low and authoritarian, disembodied voice in the utter blackness of no space. “Where is he?”
“Um… I’m not sure, sir…” Said yet another voice in the void. This voice was higher pitched, and somewhat nasally, like a mouse. “Give me a sec to find out.”
“Hurry it up! If he starts wreaking havoc on some poor world because of your blunder, I’ll have your head!”
“Meep!”
Ticking sounds could be heard, like the clickity clack of raindrops on cobblestones. Then, a bright light appeared in a somewhat square shape. It was surrounded by a white fog that sort of shimmered in the low eerie light.
Two faces could be seen by the light of the white square shape. One was a fox with white fur. His muzzle was drawn into a snarl as he gazed at the light. His eyes began to glow yellow. The other figure was a rat. His deft fingers were tapping on a white plastic pad. They appeared to be making the pattering noise.
“I think I’ve found him, sir,” The rat exclaimed excitedly. His lips came up in a smile, and then dropped to a sullen frown as he gazed at the screen and examined it more closely.
“What?” asked the fox. “What’s the problem? What did you do?”
“I swear, it wasn’t me!”
“What is it?!”
“Well… um… he made it safely to Tinder Haven of Genosphere? We should really rename these.”
“Genosphere? Oh no. Don’t tell me.”
“Yes. He’s…”
“A giant, now?”
“To put it bluntly, yes. Tell me sir, why do our travelers often turn mondo whenever they go there?”
“I’m not sure. Not my area of expertise. Problem is that they do, and when they’re someone like Jack, they tend to wreak havoc on the natives. Poor people shouldn’t have to go through that.”
“So… what now, sir?”
“Well, first you’ve gotta fix the damn transporter so we can get him out of there before he does something very regrettable in that world!”
“Yes sir”
“How long will it take?”
“It depends on what the damage actually is… I would estimate about ten hours, maximum.”
“Good. Keep me posted. I’m going to check on my trainee in Earth of Hutgarth. Maybe he’ll have come to his senses about that arena by now.”
“Very good sir.”
