Hep = Related to beatnic and jazz subculture. A person highly in touch with the latest trends, especially of non-mainstream, anti-establishment cultures. Though "Hep" was closely related to "HepCat" and the jazz/beatnic cultures, it was also "modulated" into "hip", but kept a similar meaning (trendy, very knowledgeable of trends and "cutting edge" stuff). It's "anti-establishment, non-mainstream" meaning evolved likewise, and "hip" became "hippie"; related to the 'flower children' and folks of that philosophy. It was a very 1940's thing, but "hip" and "hipster" and even "hep" (though much less so) occasionally come back into common usage.

Ah yes. Martin Wagner's Hepcats. Fantastic book. It evolved out of his student comic strip in the UT Austin newspaper, also where Berke Breathed (Bloom County) got his start.
Here are some hep cats to more fully explain the concept. Seriously, this is killer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owV8PlYC1L0 Cab Calloway- We the Cats Will Hep Ya

No, he never did finish it. As far as I can tell, he just up and disappeared. No one seems to know what happened to him. It's a damn shame. I thought he was a hell of an artist, and he wrote well also. There is a collection of his college strips called The Collegiate Hepcats that's worth checking out.
