The big otter on the left is Sascha Gottschalk, a new character for Feila's Victorian-esque era. He's a hot air balloonist in his mid-30's, former anti-war activist and proud father of the 11-year-old kit on the left, Liam. Sascha's had some tough times in his life. Though he's born of wealth, his twin older brothers were drafted for the Great War that was fought mainly between the two superpowers of Gawain (Eastern Europe/Germany) and Edwin (Western Europe/America). Both were killed in combat while Sascha was running a pro-peace club at his boarding school in northern Gawain.
After school, he joined up with a peaceful, anti-war group and met Corinna Engel, another otter activist. He courted and eventually bedded her. Corrina gave birth nine months after their first pre-marital sexual encounter to Liam and dropped out of the activist scene to raise him. Sascha helped with money from his parents but never got the chance to ask Corrina to marry him properly as he was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison for a crime he did not commit with other members of his activist organization.
In prison, Corinna brought Liam to visit every week for two years, then told Sascha she was getting married to someone who would help her take care of and raise Liam properly. After that, the weekly visits included an otter by the name of Andrew Bauer, or 'Uncle Andy' as Liam referred to him. Sascha holds a grudging respect for the fellow, a quick-witted shop-keeper who loves numbers, but still feels jealous despite himself.
Sascha was released four years early from his sentence for good behavior and because the War had ended and political prisoners weren't top of the government's list to keep housed and fed with the ailing economy the post-War depression brought. Presently, Sascha runs a commercial ballooning business just a few blocks from where Corinna, Andy and Liam live. He regularly takes his son on trips to neighboring cities and is teaching him ballooning along with Fire and Wind magic that are useful to the trade.

Interesting that Feila is branching into a Victorian age.
My first novel (about 60% complete) is set in a medieval age, but one of its sequels (in planning stage only) is set in an age roughly analogous to the 1930s where all the political dissidents have been forced to flee and live on airships... and that's all I'm telling in public. ^^
