I love the level of detail you've put into these tripod sketches. There's an almost organic complexity to the design that I think comes much closer to the mental images Wells' original descriptions evoked than most of the artistic interpretations I've seen (Spielberg film notwithstanding). I like how you've managed to integrate the 'cowl' Wells mentioned in the book, without making it seem awkward or cumbersome. The spherical, tendril-covered 'hand' at the end of the tripod's tentacles is a nice touch, and makes sense given the Martian habit of wearing different mechanical bodies according to the task at hand.
I'm really loving these Martian sketches. Your knowledge of the source material really shows through, and adds to the appeal of the designs on display.

He he, well as for the 'crescent hood' as it's called in the novel, I put my little spin on it (which is also reminiscent of the shields from both movies). The hood is segmented and each of these segments is held by a mechanical appendage attached to the main 'head' of the war machine. The tripod itself is equipped with, what I like to call, reverse-sonar. It projects a field of ultrasonic vibration about a hundred feet around the tripod. The moment the field is disturbed by a projectile flying at high speed (not creatures running though) The appendage shifts the position of the closest hood segment between the projectile and the head (sort of like a knight using his shield). As for the "spherical, tendril-covered 'hand' at the end of the tripod's tentacles" WROOOOONG!!!! ^ ^
If you look closely at the tripod you'll see a spherical object hanging under it's head between it's legs (........oh god that sounded bad). That is where it's tentacles come from. And one can't tell are the mechanic or organic. It would seem like there's an organic matter trapped inside that round container and is controlled from the main cockpit. The tentacles themselves don't have "hands" at their ends, some are sharpened though. One of them is always busy caring a heat ray emitter.
