I used to go to school in Socorro (NMT) but didn't get out near as much as I should have. I've been through much of the state, but chiefly hang around with friends in Del Valle, at Belen and the university neighborhood in Al-B-B-Q. I've been to see pals staying at Los Alamos, checking out the recently-made volcanic rocks...not a good place for bachelors, though--one friend of mine was stopped by the police at least twice while riding a bicycle. The cops don't have much to do in L. A. now that they don't have to worry so much about Bolsheviks.
Last summer I wandered through Gran Quivira, Tent Rocks S.P., and the Manzanos. Ate at a horrible place in Santa Rosa and had to crap on three different rock outcrops in the next couple of hours. Fortunately, there was nobody to be seen from horizon to horizon. And I did cover it up (myow).
Also, I go by Blake's at least once while I'm out there, because you can't get chile on a burger east of Tucumcari.
I was too timid to knock on Clyde Tombaugh's door in Las Cruces while he was still living. He would have appreciated it.
Um, other loci I've been to:
Chaco Canyon (in a Toyota Echo)
Hondo Canyon, Taos Co., found a cross-shaped staurolite which I gave to my ever-so-Catholic landlady
Navajo coal mine (while in a mining class at NMT)
Hwy 60 W and E of I-25 (where I did the marathon outdoor crapping I was talking about earlier).
I used to be a mudlogger in the Loco Hills NE of Carlsbad (eccchhhh...well, maybe it was the uplifting company)
Magdalena & the San Mateo mts. (another school thing)
Mt. Capulin (I wish we could have one of those in the center of town, Mojo Jojo could live on it)

That's the one big spot I've missed so far. I've read about it--the WWII cartoonist Bill Mauldin lived in the Cloudcroft area as a kid. The closest I've been to there is going thru Lincoln county on my way to Carizozo and Socorro. Next time I go out there--probably next summer--I'll be sure to come see it.
