i found this info when i googled your question about dalmatians "Dalmatians have been associated with fire departments for many years. Why? Many years ago, Dalmatians were used to chase rats out of the fire stations and horse stables of London. The dogs also guided the horse-pulled fire wagons through city streets."

Although I'm not sure if it's true or not, I've been told that the temperament of the Dalmatian breed is why they were chosen. The dogs get along well with horses.

It seems like there's a dog for every occupation *giggles* Dalmatians for firefighters, German shepherds for policemen, and Labradors for seeing-eye dogs. I guess grown-ups really love dogs!

*giggle* I like cats more than dogs (though I've got lots of good friends who are puppies!), and cats don't have anything to do with occupations! They just expect people to work for them... ^.^

Just like the quote says: "Dogs have masters, cats have staff".

Well, we kitties have been associated with Sailors, Actors, Writers, and Granaries, but those are really just a reflection of my species' two great talents: snuggling things and killing things...

D'awww very cute and I can tell you why their associated with them here in the states. See the first fire engine thing was pretty much just a pump on a cart. The Dalmatian would run ahead of the cart on the way to the seen clearing the way. On top of that they were good companions at the fire station and did serve a it as pest control. That is if I'm remembering that ep of Dogs 101 correctly.

This is super cute Zee-Zee! ^_^ What I'm finding out is that yes, as said, they were used as carriage dogs back when fire engines were pulled by horses, to help clear the way, but also, they were especially well suited for this because of their energetic nature and because of their spots. The fire engine's horses could easily recognize the dalmatians because they had spots! So the horses weren't scared of them running around and barking, because they were familiar. Neat!
