This started as the thing in the lower left there, and after lots and lots of sculpting (and lots of hassle and annoyance and learning experiences) it ended up as a kirin!
It's not quite done yet, it's going to have a wig/mane kind of thing added on, but for now it's good enough to show off!

Yeah. Even this little "cheap" plastic guy was still $35, and of course the resin ones are usually hundreds! And so few companies do good animals. Half the time when they do they're some kind of special, limited thing so that even if you can get together the money, by the time you do they're all sold! Well, and I've never seen anybody do a kirin at all, so I had to do my own anyway. I kind of want to do a foo dog next! Though I think I'll do a design that doesn't require a full-body repaint, that really doesn't work well, since the paint is in the joints too, and is already wearing a bit just from moving him around.
The limited editions were the snag I hit, or the fact that some companies don't really ship to the US unless sold through another distributor. There was a furry artist who custom cast and assembled her own, but they went for hundreds and while very, very nice, were always out of my range (Totally trying not to price whine, because I do understand why the cost was high). It's part of why I'm considering doing my own.
Oh my gosh a foo dog would be amazing!

Oh yeah, I'm fiddling with casting some SUPER simple doll-things myself, and it's a TON Of work, so I don't begrudge the prices, at least not the small artisan ones (some of the big companies are totally overcharging, but that's another argument altogether.) But making this guy was fun. A lot of work, but fun!
Blade, as far as the paint chipping and wearing already around the joints, have you tried "sueding" them yet? It's just a very thin layer of hot glue or a similar substance (I used liquid electrical tape in a recent project) inside the "cup" of the joint. If you want, I can take pics later of my recent sueding and post it to my account so you can see what I did. Sueding isn't perfect, but it does help, a lot. It's more for poseability than anything else, but it still helps with the rubbing problem if everything is sealed properly.
I currently own too many BJDs... and this is after getting rid of several of them. ._.;

I know about sueding, though I hadn't thought of it it in the context of preventing chipping. I might give it a try!
I only have one "proper" bjd right now, but I've ordered several more, including some cheap, knock-off ones to mess around with and mod, because I'm too scared of ruining hundreds of dollars worth of doll to mod the regular kind. I'm very much into bjds right now. :)

XD I'll have to get my Bobobie Tony mod job put up so you can see what he used to look like and what he looks like now. He's a little would cub now, was a human before that. If you ever have any questions about a specific brand, mold, etc., feel free to note me and I'll tell you what I can including which ones I own currently if you want. I currently have Iplehouse, Soom, Bobobie, and DollZone. :)
I have the EID Jessica. :3 And the EID Circus Master Tedros minus his beast head (didn't want it, just didn't appeal to me.). Also, here's a shot of the wolf boy. :3 Going to post more later. XD http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9829301/
Wow! So nice!
Im about to start customizing my first doll, but I went cheaper than a BJD (in the money exchange, the cheap ones are still too much for me atm) so I got a couple Monster High cause I wanna make my fursona out of it :P
Im still researching what I can use and can't to paint it, I don't want it to look crafty ;_;
Anyways, what did you use to make the extras? clay? or you casted a new piece of plastic? :O
