Sign of Ink and Flesh
First picture of 2008. Wh00t! And my scanner absolutely crippled the red. :/ It's too intense and half the nuances are missing. *sighs*
Starting with the new year Bloodi has a new feature... a tiny Omega tattoo on the paw pad of his right "hand".
The red critter on the left is a Canvas Inker.
The canvas are a creation of
wylde and I had planned to connect them and the Bloodhounds since a long while. There are two subspecies of the Canvas that are smaller than their "normal" cousins. These subspecies are the inkers and the piercers. Inkers have long hollow hand claws which they use as tattooing needles. The only part of their body ornamented by ink is their palms, but they are usually heavily pierced. The pierces are the opposite. If you wanna know more about them, feel free to ask
wylde :)
This female canvas is checking Bloodi's palm which has recently been tattooed by her. It's still swollen and painful, but it's healing well. Sleepin in his big companions arm is Bloodi's Blarf Yiggadan, who is helping him to distract from the throbbing pain in his paw pad.

wow... very neat. I was wondering on some of the details until your description, it makes alot of sense.
I was thinking it looked more like a brand than a tattoo since it looks like the inked part is sunken in abit...
You put a LOT of detail into all those peircings, it looks marvelous. <3

I just love the way you can color and shade black. You work mostly with colored pencils right? What brand do you use? And man do you have any tips? 2 of my characters are predominantly black and I hardly ever draw them anymore because I get so fed up trying to color black.
I love this piece by the way. The red creature is very intriguing.

Water Colours + Pencils, yes. I use the German brand Polychromos by Faber Castell. The best I have ever stumbled over so far. Even better than the US Prismacolours.
Hmm... depending on the style of an artist there are many things one could try. I usually start colouring with the darkest colour first which is truly unwise, because the a) risk to smudge is larger and b) making shadows on already dark fur is hard till impossible. But on the other hand that's the way I get colours flow into each other the best way.
So I start with the darkest colour and I leave blank the areas where I later on wish to colour with middle colour tone and when I use the middle colour tone I again leave out the parts where I wish to place the highlights.
It's also a matter of varying pressure.

Hmm, well I know all about varying pressure. It was a hard lesson to learn with my art teachers constantly telling me to push harder. It took awhile to catch on.
I like to color dark areas first and then work my way towards light as well, but I have trouble coloring black. I guess a better question is- what colors do you use to achieve the depth in black fur that you do besides black? I use some greys occassionally with a white pencil, but it doesn't look as rich as yours. I can kind of see a hint of a tan shade when I look at the hip, but I'm not certain. ;3
Oh, and I use Prismacolors, I figure they're the best I can get, although when it comes to markers (which I use underneath as a "wash" from time to time like one would do with watercolor) I hear Copics are better. I was just curious if there was something better than Prismacolor for pencils that is easily accessible. But I don't think there is it sounds like!

Polychromos are far better, but not easily accessible outside of Europe, I am afraid.
I do indeed use black for black fur. Uhm... let's sum it up like this:
Black, dark grey, middle till light grey --> basic fur colour, mild highlights
second coat of black --> deeper shadows
white --> highlights
Hope that makes sense.
