Leo
Finally, after, what, three months of inactivity, I have completed this pet portrait! A rather adorable long-haired dachshund by name of Leo.
This is one of the first times I've used primarily pastel in a more serious work, and I love its saturation and ease of broad application in little time. Keeping the surface from smudging is a very specific issue with pastels, though, and need to be maintained carefully. I will certainly be taking extra time to make sure this piece is shipped with as little risk of damage as possible. Bring me the iron cage, mwahahaha! ...ehem.
11 x 14 inches, pastel and colored pencil (facial details) on Canson Mi Tiente paper.
Time: ~8 hours?

Okay first off I thought this was a photo judging from the thumbnail.
Second; after browsing over the image I thought it was a digital drawing.
THEN I read the description stating that it was drawn traditionally using pastels and colored pencils.
You sir, have amazing talent.

On a larger approximation, it may have been up to 10-12 in total, but I think that is how much time it took! If I did all of this drawing in colored pencil, ugh.... I don't even want to imagine it! XD My poor hand!
Now I'll have to see what you do in pastel - it sounds quite impressive! : D Thank you for your comment. : )

Messy is right! I definitely prefer media that throws less dust around, though their usefulness for ease of saturation over a large area superseded the dust factor for me this time around. : ) Then again, this has been my first serious attempt with chalk pastels as well, and wished to give them a chance. Thank you for your comments - it is nice to discuss these things with similar people! : )
Ohhh this is chalk! Hahah! I thought it was oil pastel for a second. :D You did gorgeous with with them! I have a ton of chalk pastels; I was working on a big piece for a friend, but my inspiration got deflated, haha... The paper's pretty fuzzy and the dust sticks to it like glue. It likes oil pastels better. :D I've found that matte posterboard of all things really loves chalk pastels and charcoal. :)
