Ran across this bridge pier while running around for work today. What I can't figure is why there would have been a bridge here so long ago to begin with. There are remains of what looks like a steep road on the other side of the creek and I'm guessing that the road I took the picture from turned here at some point to connect to the road across the creek. Kind of odd as the bridge that was here would have to have been set on a somewhat steep angle to meet up with the cliff face on the opposite side.

I shall have to look into that! Living near Chicago, there are plenty of opportunities for that sort of thing...and for photographing it! https://www.furaffinity.net/full/5778804/
I know how these can be. There's one set of piers near me, crossing the Burlington's Eola Yard. There are four concrete pillars there, along with evidence of footings for steel trestle-bents, but I can't see any evidence of a road or railroad on either side, using the satellite imagery, and of course I can't make any close observations, since it's in the middle of an active rail yard. But it always is fascinating what can be found, and the questions that they inspire. And then you find things that are still in use, too: https://www.furaffinity.net/full/6408026/
I find http://www.historicaerials.com very useful in figuring out these things, provided the images are in their setup.
