Some time ago I posted a journal talking about how Kaynus' jaw had broken at the Triangle Furs' bowling meetup, and it's taking me all this time (and another bowling meet tomorrow) to finally get around to fixing the jaw. Fortunately a little bit of floral wire went a long way in patching up the weak plastic mesh struts that were holding the end of the jaw together.
The two photos on the left show the damage, the middle photos are in-progress shots showing the (rather makeshift) metal supports that are now holding the jaw together on both sides, and then in the final shots you can see where I re-lined the entire jaw with black foam (it was only partially lined before) and re-glued the fur in place. Toss in a fresh set of rubber bands and the jaw feels good as new! :)
I'm glad to have this fixed, but this little adventure has convinced me that it's time to make a new suit. I've given up on making any progress on the Nullstrukt suit until after FWA, but my hope is that I can at least build a new balaclava-based head for Kaynus (as well as a tail and maybe handpaws) prior to FWA, and then finish whatever parts are left for a full v2 suit after the con. After that it will be time to apply what I learned from that project to finally making my dimetrodon. :D

*chuckles* Man... you NC furs are a rough crowd, even when bowling.
The picture in the lower-left is kinda funny - as if Kaynus's face was stuck in an epic DURR! moment. It looks the repair did the job, but yeah, totally time to engineer a v2 suit. With all you've learned, I can't wait to get a look at the v2 design. ^_^

Hey, bowling is a full-contact sport! :P
Ha ha, yes, I had to have some fun with the broken jaw before fixing it so I took a few pictures of the severely off-kilter lower jaw. The fixed jaw is pretty much back to the original spec (maybe a tad better because the metal wiring took a lot of the warp out of the jaw), but it is beyond time for a new suit. I'm still playing around with different sketches to try and find how I want to update Kaynus' look and I might go back to that for this week's tablet practice. One thing I do know is that I will be spending much more time sculpting foam to give the head a better shape this time around, heh.

Oh Gods. To see him... deconstructed, even partially, is sorta morbid! Still, it is these kinda pics that are educational, and you can really see the quality of the fur you used, too.
I'm still sewing and learning, but haven't had cycles to work on suit stuff except for photoshop/design. I need to go collect some used vehicle seat foam and start trying to glue that stuff together to learn how to shape it.

I have to admit, it did feel kind of weird when I was ripping the fur off of the jaw so I could get in there and do the repair work. I had to catch myself from apologizing to him. :P And yes, I love that fur (especially because it is so freakin' soft!). I think I've talked myself out of switching to a solid, more toony fur for Kaynus v2 and I will most likely just end up re-stocking the colors I need from this fur and go from there.
I'm no expert at shaping foam, but I'm hoping to spend a bit more time and effort on it with this next go-around. I think it really just boils down to having a good deal of patience and only carving off small pieces at a time. Oh, and having a good vacuum cleaner on hand because it gets really messy really quickly. :P

This comes to mind when I see this

Glad you were able to fix it at least.

I had not seen those before, but after looking them up on Google...you are totally right, ha ha ha. Except Kaynus wouldn't do any soul-sucking or anything of that sort, he would probably just be looking for a good beer or maybe some breakfast biscuits with jam. :P
I will still be getting some use out of this head, especially until I build the new one. Once I do get the second suit built I really, really want to recruit a friend to wear the first suit and get a side-by-side picture just for the laughs. :D
