I had an issue like that before. I went into photoshop and used the magic eraser tool to erase the background of the image, and when I uploaded it it suddenly came back. Turned out it had to do with the fact the file was too big for FA, so FA resized it and it replaced the transparent background with white again.
You can also make PNGs transparent, btw. :>

So gorgeous. I just want to get lost in that cotton candy hair labyrinth!
I also find it much easier to make a transparent .png. Here's what it looks like after gave it a quick once over in photoshop, just using magic wand/eraser & delete, but I have crude pawlike hands and poor photoshop skills so I couldn't get into the edges and crevices to give it nice clean edges without taking an hour over it: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7206952/ED....._bloodpact.png

There's a lot of weird little options in photoshop you might be able to try to make cleaning up the slight grit & variation of the paper a little easier. A few that spring to mind.... Altering the sensitivity of the magic wand, so it's less picky about the pixel colour boundaries it will run over. For tiny bits of dark grit sometimes the eraser can do, also select>modify>expand by a few pixels. You might also be able to use select colour range, then use the deselect pixels option of the magic wand/quick select tool to keep the pixels of that colour you want to keep inside the image. I dunno! I find it really frustrating how hard it sometimes to go from analogue to digital! Software is so finnicky~
this is so fucking awesome; the concept, the characters, the massive amounts of hair wrapping around them like some sort of damask frame... so beautiful...!!
also I love kinoko ;_; her uneven antlers are so darling. I'm drawing her 4u, but as a full picture instead of just a headshot because there's no way I could do justice to her majestic locks otherwise. I do have a headshot for you too though ooooohhh~
