Marcos Hererra, Stealer of Bases and Ladies' Hearts
This is Marcos Hererra (cheetah), the Charleston Swamp Foxes' star center fielder in the FLB. A real speedster, he led the FLB with 60 stolen bases last season and swiped 12 in the 2012 Wild World Series, a new record.
Charleston manager Larry Howe (cheetah), a former Swamp Fox himself, frequently uses Marcos as a weapon on the bases. Hererra is the FLB's active leader in steals with 266 in his 5-year career.
A bit eccentric, Marcos wears stirrups and cleats when he plays, with no socks. Why? He takes off his cleats when he goes to play the outfield. He says he enjoys the feel of the outfield grass and believes it helps him play better. He prefers to protect his paws on the brick dirt of the diamond when he bats and runs the bases. Few argue with his methods as they seem to work for him.
I took the pose and similar dress from a 1992 Score special "Dream Team" card of Rickey Henderson, whom is similarly posed and dressed, minus the hat. It's one of the more unique cards I've seen and I thought it would fit Marcos and his personality. Though he still occasionally speaks in broken English, given that he is from the Dominican Republic, he doesn't need to speak clearly to get noticed.
