Nephila clavipes can be found in the warmer regions of the Americas, though 26 other species can be found throughout the world. They are named for their golden silky web they weave, which can be brightly seen in the reflecting sun.

Common names are golden orb-weaver, giant wood spider, and banana spider, and are sometimes called writing spiders due to the zigzag patterns that can be found in their web.
