I've never tried 3DS Max, although I've always wanted to. It's pretty much the standard for game mods and production. I haven't found out how to make GTA mods through Maya yet, but have already found scripts for Max. The lighting engine is pretty freakin' awesome. Its near realistic...if not near, as realistic as you can possibly get IMO.
