I took this photo at an Idle No More Prayer rally in Seattle, Washington near Pike Place Market. There were several speakers, prayers, songs, and a few dances at the event. There was a lot of great energy and it was great to see the turnout we had (approximately 500).
Idle No More is a grassroots movement started by Indigenous Canadians protesting Bill C-45 in Canada which would allow the government to take control of tribal lands bypassing treaties, as well as further pollute the land and waters that many Indigenous Canadians have relied on. It also stands in solidarity with Chief Theresa Spence who has been on a hunger strike for nearly a month now, demanding an audience with Prime Minister Harper and a representative of the queen to discuss the various issues surrounding Native communities and their relationship with the government. Idle No More is not just about Indigenous Canadians however, it is in defense of all native peoples in the Americas to defend land rights and the better treatment of the governments with Indigenous Americans.
IDLE NO MORE
Calls on All People
To Join in a Revolution
Which Honors and Fulfills
Indigenous Sovereignty
Which Protects the Land & Water
Colonization Continues
Through Attacks
To Indigenous Rights
And Damage to the Land & Water
We Must Repair These Violations,
Live the Spirit and Intent of the Treaty Relationship,
Work Towards Justice in Action,
and Protect Mother Earth
