Theming is an artistic element that the audience can relate to in their own life. Pokémon's theming is building teamwork and trust to cover each other's weaknesses. Superman's theming is struggling against a corrupt government that puts on a benevolent face (Lex Luthor).
With the ominous shadowy background, the sharp, triangular curve in his eye, the very small and faint bits of light, (his skin is white, but the shadows are so intense he looks black!) I get this sense of encountering a tough, dark, and aggressive character with a lot of confidence (no offense to the character's player if I'm inaccurately judging...). He looks kinda bossy, even.
