Yes, that's so. What's new about this, I suppose, is whatever technique is used to take them. Todd didn't use any special camera that I noticed. I assume it's a program that creates two symmetrically modified images from the one taken. Of course, this doesn't create any new information with which to build a 3D image. That might be why I find the 3D effect rather weak.
I'm one of the few others on FA who's toyed with this effect. It's a lot easier if you swap the photos and go with cross-eye viewing - I spent a while staring at both examples before I figured out you were using a different definition of "squint just right" than I'd expected.
