This is a late birthday gift for another old (27) person's birthday who I talk to on deviantart.
I hope that you like.

There's just something about that pose I find really aesthetically appealing.
What kind of pencil? I always used (maybe should again, but then I'd have to obtain a scanner to share anything - much simpler with a tablet) 0.5mm or 0.3mm HB, or 2B when I could find thinner refills of softer grades.
Do you tend to use the usual kind of elemental construction lines early on, or just build up the body bit by bit? I have almost zero artistic ejumacation, as you can tell - though one lesson I learned before long was some kind of vague skeleton at least helped avoid "HALP IZ GOT NO FEETZ" syndrome when the paper inconveniently runs out at their ankles. ^_^;

Beats me in what could it be, cause when I look at it... I can't put a finger on it, but I have that feeling also.
I just do things with a 0.5 mm and a 0.9 mm Mechanical HB pencil for these. If I use wooden pencils, it would be from 2H to 6 or 8B I rarely use them outside of school. :\
I use a bit of both. I use some sort of construction of elements and improvise at the same time.
The "ankle cut" syndrome is a widespread thing. I avoided that by using big sheets of paper at first so, they would have to be ultra-huge to get the ankles cut off from them. :]
