I think it's more that they wanted to keep them that way before, there's been different pokemon 3d games around for ages along with the classic ones, but I'm not really sure what made them think 2.5D was a good choise this time (or perhaps they were forced by the 3ds being around now)
Ahahha. I love Nintendo games, and I only noticed it after my boyfriend mentioned it. It seems systems are starting to fall back on gimmicks, but Nintendo moreso since it has always appealed more to the casual gamer than the other systems. Microsoft and Sony really just gave you games, and Nintendo threw out things to make it seem innovative or exciting like dual screens, 3d effects, motion controls (I don't really think the latter two were very good).
But the motion controls, for me, are a huge turn off. I want to sit back and play, and acting out the game kind of takes some of the immersive bits and turns them into just looking and feeling silly. And my brother has a 3DS, and it hurts my eyes. It doesn't really look 3D at all xD
But I can agree with the movie bit...I am so tired of movies re releasing in 3D :I

If you know Angry Joe and well other movie/game reviewers, most of them agree that 3D in itself is a gimmick. Really, the only movie where it felt natural was Avatar. And even that movie is nice just in "2D".
I never had a gaming console, until a PSP, and then later on a NDS (Lite). Not a huge fan of either, but somehow, I think that since PC has no real "gimmicks", games for PC are cooler. Less dumbed down and almost never gimmicky. (oh god kinect).

I think the worst part is that this game isn't actually even 3D, the world map is still build like 2D and so is the movement, only difference is that you view it from an unpleasant angle and the battles are in 3D (yet its still turn based), which in my opinion makes pokemon look even worse than what they are. Stylized styles never go well in 3D u_u
Considering the natural progression of any video game company, it's normal to require gamers to upgrade systems to continue playing new releases. I was shocked Black and White 2 were "normal" DS games, honestly.
The timeline of Game Boys goes as follows:
Classic: 1989
GB Pocket: 1996
GB Color: 1998
GB Advance: 2001
GBA SP: 2003
DS: 2004
GB Micro: 2005
3DS: 2011
So.. it's been a larger gap between DS and 3DS than any other system other than the transition to color, which was staggered with the release of the "pocket" to appeal to those seeking something more portable. That also being said, it's been well over a year since the 3DS was released, giving folks time to gradually adjust to the new system. I'm sorry that you don't feel it's fair, but the company has to do what's profitable for them.

I don't mind the games updating I just think they should find other things to update besides a few useless tidbits. Me and my friend were discussing somethings they should be improving instead, that would really really make the games more interesting. And it's pokemon. Die hard pokemon fans will buy it no matter what! I don't like black2 and white2 but I still bought it for the sake of it being pokemon.
That's your opinion. I would say there has to be a market enjoying the 3D games, or they'd not be marketing them as thoroughly as they are. I'm thrilled they provide the option for folks to play without the 3D if they choose. It's not profitable to continue to make games that are backwards compatible with the old DS systems that have been out for years.. ALL the game systems participate in that pressuring to buy the newer systems.
I'd hope so. And I've met a lot of people who got really tired of 3D. Like I said I always just saw it as a special treat that popped up sometimes. If you keep eating that treat people are going to get sick of it. It's like CGI... it can look good sure but it can't be used for everything.
I get a kick out of 3d in certain cases -- the Mario Kart Cinematics, Nintendogs, etc.
It's really a very 'cheap' feature to include when you consider how many games are already made with 3D models and all 3d-ness requires is just coding an extra camera.
Ultimately though, you have to be able to consider the game WITHOUT the 3D as well as with it, especially with parental controls requiring a 2D-only lock on games.

I'unno, I kinda like it. As far as Pokemon go, at least. It actually looks fairly normal compared to so many of them. Floof in the ears, slender muzzle, non-eye gouging colors, and the weirdest thing is the hip-wings which is still pretty tame.
Would you rather have more floating gears or ice cream cones? Not me. I think they did a good job on designing Fennekin compared to most of the recent Pokemons.
And hey, I like the slightly pointy muzzle. Dunno why, but I do. The stylized nature of it will lend well to traits I like in requested pictures. :P

To me the ear poofs are probably the worse, next is the muzzle and then the headsize. Knowing that the artist is, somewhere deep down, capable of doing good designs makes me not approve ones that are less great. There have been a few recent really good designs too, just less and less than before.
Also everyone drawing the character so well over the internet put my hopes up too high...

Wellll, if you strip out the overexaggerated style of the Pokemon stuff in general (I mean, look at others like Zoroark) then Fennekin isn't that bizarre. The ear floofs may be huge and stiff but plenty of artists around here do something similar. The pointy nose is a common thing for canine types in the series and just symbolizes a muzzle. And having a big head on a tiny body is another stylized thing that they do frequently. If you strip out the stylization and overexaggeration then it really does become the creature at the top. :3
Never said the Pokemon art style was appealing, just that the Pokemon's core features are actually non-offensive overall. You can at least identify what they are, unlike so many Pokemon that make your head rotate 180 just to have half-a-clue what they are trying to look like. XD

if you're doing stylized, it needs to be stylized in the right way. I absolutely love stylyzed artwork, and I love a lot of pokemon designs, especially zoroark. but oversized inside ear tufts is something that never looked great, and other foxes like zorua and vulpix didn't have a retarded muzzle either.
I remember Zorua or whichever the pre-evolved form was, on the 3DS's Pokedex app, looking really really similar to this new gal. *shrugs* But I'm not a huge Pokemon fan so without going to look it up, I can't trust my memory too much. Best I can say is don't sweat it and draw it in whatever style you want. Instead of stiff ear-filling fluff, make it loose and soft looking. Instead of huge head, draw it fennec size (which is still pretty damn big looking once you count ears ;P)
I'd hate to interrupt but zorua indeed have that similar nose http://img.pokemondb.net/artwork/zorua.jpg
he has a pointy nose too
the only difference is that this new pokemon doesn't have a small nose like zorua and it's nose is bigger like a canine unlike zorua which was like a little dot
either way both muzzles are pointy~
and i think the ear tufts are cute =)

Fennekin = フォッコ which is just a slight vowel shift away from ファック which is the katakana transliteration of "fuck"
Froakie = ケロマツ (Keromatsu) is the one with the penis on his face
Chespin = ハリマロン (Harimaron) is the third new one
Oshawott = ミジュマル (Mijumaru) is the water-type starter from Black/White with the flaccid penis on his chest

Fennekin's Japanese name Fokko is apparently supposed to come from fox + fuoco (Italian for fire) + -ko (diminutive suffix), similar to the English fennec + kindle + kin. Haven't heard that comment about it before.
Same on Froakie; I always thought those bubbles on its face looked odd, but that's still a stretch.
And Oshawott's is obviously supposed to be a seashell; I can't see that as anything naughty when I'm trying.

I never really liked the starter designs to begin with, gen 1 and 2 were fair enough, charmander, totodile and cyndaquil were cool but then ummm.............. the reason pokemon kept being cool was that there was occasionally some really cool ones out there to catch, gen 5 nailed the legendaries after a long while
