Cindy’s magic act was off to a good start. She’d warmed up with a couple of simple tricks and now it was time for the main event!
“For my next trick, I’ll need a volunteer from the audience!”
Rows upon rows of hands waved at her from across the auditorium. Cindy always liked seeing a full house, but she already had someone in mind…
“Will the audience member sitting in seat 9G please stand?”
A rather portly looking badger rose excitedly from his chair.
“That’s me!” he shouted. “I’ve got seat 9G!”
“That’s very good, sir,” Cindy giggled. “Please step aside and let our volunteer pass safely by! Will the young lady seated beside this stout fellow kindly make her way foreword?”
The badger returned to his seat with a huff as Heather made her way up on stage...
“For this trick, I’m going to reenact an old favorite: sawing a person in half!”
Heather looked horrified!
“My word! I would have never put up my hand if I’d of know it was something dangerous!”
“Now, now,” Cindy reassured her. “There’s no danger at all. I promise you won’t be hurt. All you’ll feel is a tickle.”
Heather bit her lip and tried to look brave.
“Alright, well, what do I have to do?”
Cindy wheeled over a long wooden box with holes cut in each end. She helped Heather get up inside and had her place her head out through one hole and her feet out through the others.
“Now, as you can see, our volunteer is locked up safe inside this box!”
Cindy rotated the box around the stage so everyone could see that there was no place for Heather to be hiding. She really was still trapped in the box!
“Now, I take the magic saw and, in a few quick strokes, I cut her in half!”
Heather winced in anticipation, but she felt nothing. The saw seemed to pass right through her without harm.
Cindy pulled the two halves of the box apart and turned them so heather’s head and feet faced the audience.
“And there you have it!” Cindy said with a bow. “Two halves of one whole!”
The audience collectively gasped in amazement, then there came a voice from somewhere in the back. “You’re a fake! Those aren’t her real feet! Fake! Fake! Fake!”
“These are too her real feet!” Cindy shouted!
“Prove it!”
“Fine,” she cried, “I’ll just show you!”
Heather watched as Cindy pried off her sneakers. “Hey! What are you doing?”
Paying no mind to her assistant, Cindy drew off the wolf’s socks, as well. She produced a feather from her sleeve and began stroking it up and down Heather’s paws.
Heather’s toes wiggled and curled as Cindy tickled her feet. She howled with laughter and shook with mirth. Next time, she’d think twice before volunteering for something like this!
