This is another poster for my relative suffering from the big D, depression. She is, like me, somebody who thinks that there is some reason that our universe exists, although we don't claim to have any idea why or what for anything exists. So this poster is for her. Atheists and literalists should be equally irritated by this poster, but it's not for you-all. You're welcome to appreciate the style, though, and distribute freely to people that might get some good out of it, whatever you think of their perceptions of the greater universe

I would add that a perfectly healthy atheist will assert that there is no God. But they will also tell you, probably, that there IS a basis for love and meaning in life: Bertrand Russell did this every day of the week. Anybody should read what he's got to say, although I don't believe every word of it. Just don't think about what he looks like in a bathing suit.
I've known some pretty religious fellows to be some hardcore existentialists.
See: Dostoevsky, Fyodor
Either way your argument is pretty goddamn stupid. It pretty much boils down to "I mean SERIOUSLY!! C'mon!!" Saying that the truth is self-evident does not mean that it is either self-evident or the truth.
It's not an uncommon argument, really, in religion, politics, sports, and everything... it's just not a particularly good argument.

Well, this poster is made for somebody with a particular frame of reference. All I care about is that she doesn't kill herself while she's sick. It would leave bloodstains all over the house I would inherit. Gods or no gods are beside the point, within her frame of reference the poster makes sense. Also, read some Bertrand Russell if you haven't done it yet. He makes a world of sense, within his frame of reference. The frame of reference you choose is more important than the contents that are shaped by it, eh.
:P I have no problem with that...my personal desire is to not inherit a house with my kinfolk's suicidal blood all over it. I feel fairly peeved against the Southern Baptist church which put these ideas into the reptilian part of her brain in the first place. She keeps asking to borrow my .35 carbine
I'm a devout atheist, but I understand what you're trying to do. After all, when you are trying to get an idea across to someone who is not in their right head, what good does it do to tell them that their whole perception of existence is a load of crap? That certainly doesn't foster communication. "Seek first to understand, THEN to be understood." It may seem a bit self-serving to manipulate someone using their own beliefs, but I guess my ethics are a bit situational, because I can well see how the end could justify the means.
You get to a point where you say "what does it matter?" I'm a rabid anti-smoker, but when the ancient neighbor I had, decades ago, asked me to go buy her cigs, I made sure I got the right brand, because I also believe in freedom to choose, no matter how stupid I think those choices are.
Good on you. Hope it works.

Say, I'm really pleased by your thoughtful take on this. I like what you say because it's what I think, relative to this situation, but you say it really well. Even if I was opposed to the idea I would appreciate the way you put it.
Yeah, also the smoker thing. I, too, ask my friends to please try to stop, for my sake. BUT when I smoked for 10 years, I really really enjoyed it. There's a lot of crossover between the smoker/nonsmoker idea and the JEEBUS/SATAN idea. But the older you get, the more you realize you can't push ideas, you have to let them pull.

Personally, I don't think any real, serious athiest should be offended/irritated by this, or what anyone else believes. Because any true, serious athiest wouldn't care. To be otherwise is one of the greatest hypocracies around.
It only bothers me when others try to force their beliefs upon myself, and tell me that I'm wrong, so there's no way I'm gonna do the same. Anyone who does without being asked to *is* a hypocrit, and loses all credibility and validity in any words that ever leave their keyboards or mouths.
Either way, This certainly doesn't irritate me.
And I really hope your friend finds what she needs.

"there is no god because there is no reason" everything happens by circumstance dude, doesn't that make you feel better :B
Actually, to me, the order and reason of the universe is "good enough", and whether or not that fits someone's idea of a god is irrelevant, because one must find their own personal answer to life's questions in some way or another, be it through faith, atheism, or either skeptical / optimistic agnosticism

What, people think this is an attack on their (lack of) religion or something? Haw haw. What's sad is a few people here decided that your submission was an appropriate place to try and evangelize people to atheism, or defending it (as if it's being attacked?)
Reason says a lot of things to a person on a personal level, and I totally get also how you adapted this to fit the individual it was intended for. To begin rational thinking, one must be led to it in small steps -- I'm just guessing, but this submission seems like a step to say "stop being hysterical and just sit down and THINK for yourself". I'm also guessing some recent painful revelations occurred as a result of a possible lack of credible answers by any of the people she sought out to answer philosophical / theological conundrums presented. It's seriously unfortunate that many questioning their religion must be fearful of asking the tough questions, and are rightfully so when responded to with scare tactics rather than a frank discussion. I think it leads to crap like these trapped feelings some people get :T

Yep, well, it's an infallible way to start a Bible Fight...just walk up to the Christians and the Atheists who are standing around a wood fire in an oil drum by the railroad tracks and holler THAT WORD (for the rest of this scene, watch Kentucky Fried Movie)
You are correct, my intention is not to extirpate the self-destructive force that's in her; it's to give her a means of deflecting that force, even when she is almost powerless to do so. When she is not sick, she is a great dinosaur, a powerful force for reason and justice (on the local, personal level). She's a coastal defence cannon pointed at ignorance and fear. I'm hoping that by doing what I can, I can stop that thing from destroying itself. We'll see what happens... :]

I totally agree with you, I think, on every point...
I would abbreviate my own take on the universe to "Optomistic Agnosticism" except that if somebody saw my name followed by the initials "O.A." they might think it meant "Orbiting Asshole" so maybe I'll try to come up with a better acronym...I was thinking something like CHOAM which is maybe the best name for a superstore (anybody work in Bed, Bath and Beyond? Not you, Reed, you don't count)...hmmm try these on for size...

Who cares if there is a God or not?
Life is to be lived.
If you believe there to be a higher being(s) do so in a manner which gives you pleasure.
If you do not believe there to be a higher being(s) do so in a manner which gives you pleasure.
Either way dont force your beliefs on anyone else, they may not take to them kindly.
Its very plain wording, but I cant think of any way to put pretty color on it right now. Even as lain as it is I still think most would not take the time to read it all in full context but would instead break it down. :( The context is be yourself and treat others as separate entities (themselves). The golden rule in effect.

Yeah, I know. But this was made for somebody who does believe in that. Or, something like that. And, I don't want her killing herself because she feels alienated from her beliefs, so I made this image. When somebody is asking to borrow your guns is not the time to tell them that there is no Santa Claus.
