To loosely quote Neil deGrasse Tyson, the Universe is not made for us. Nearly all of known space kills all life instantly, and even the surface of the Earth is is overflowing with phenomena that are very good at wiping out complex life.
Yet, like all the lethal forces in the universe, life is a product of nature, and it cannot be easily stopped. People who've had the chance to admire the landscape around Mt. Saint Helens probably know what I mean better than I do.
