I am posting this to prove that I've done no such thing (And I think I've proven by now that I don't really need to do that)
I DID use photographic textures in the other version, but by this I mean "A spot with some shiny skin. I'll put that on his shoulder" and "This strip of hair is nice, this'll go down his chest" etc etc. Lots of photomanip and collage involved.

I demand more sketches.
As for the sketches here I notice that collar on the right side of the neck again, and the position of the collar to the left of the neck where connect, as I mentioned in the colored version.
I really enjoy seeing the sketches especially the hair and different types of hair textures. I also like the degree of pencil depth you put into the features.

Overall looks good to me, though something about his neck in the top picture.... I can't put my finger on just what, but something about it bothers me. It's probably just the way the collar conceals most of his neck, which makes it look like he's got very little neck (great, now I think the word "neck" is funny). Kinda looks like he's being choked. Overall there's not a lot I can critique on a sketch. I wish I had more. :\
