The enemy is at the gates and the war is lost. Even Connor says so and he's the king, so he should know. But Ciara doesn't understand why her mother has to be the one to stop them, or why they're talking about sending her away from the city into... what? Ciara has barely been out of her mother's apartments, and she's never been more than five minutes away from home before. Her father holds her in his arms and speaks softly to her for the first time that she can ever remember, and his words are soothing, but Ciara knows that when her mother looks angry like that there's no arguing with her. Ciara will have to leave, and she knows she will never see her parents again.

Well, they are beaten, but at least they are smart enough to know, when to run away...partially.
It's similar on how a Black Dragon fights: We either kill our pray, or not attack it at all. If however we get out-powered, we are too running away. It is not considered a cowardly act though, since we always get revenge! Live to fight another day!
Daddy is smart...at least Ciara will see another day!

You've got it. This is from Oseille, from the prolog. I think the actual scene in the book may be a tad less dramatic, but I almost like it better this way. It kind of sums up the majority of Ciara's childhood as well, the poor thing. Tiera did a great job of capturing the mood, too, especially with Ciara and Deirdre. She has always had a knack for expressions and these are done extremely well. It's nice to have the three of them together in one picture at last, too, even if it isn't the happiest moment in their lives.
