First off, I marked out the square in which the piece would be made. Then I used PVA glue in some places, stuck down a sheet of A4 on the paper and let the PVA dry. When it is dry, carefully peel the paper off. This gives you that damaged look, as a layer of the paper is stuck down with the glue.
After, I tea-stained it twice. Then I painted. :3
