Erton's motivations are not in money or power. He's very intelligent, but his upbringing was just so lousy that he became jealous and angry. He looked at other parents and saw joy in their eyes when they saw their children. He looked at his own mother and saw scorn.

Like I said and from what you told CapnSqueaks, his behavior and abilities probably give him many options to take. Like he could have hurt the kids, dispose of the kids or simply take the kids to hurt the parents.
With magic and how he's acting, quite a few options are open to him. Sacrifice the kids in some ritual for higher magic, simply hide the kids in some matter or use his skills to somehow destroy the bodies. But going on how he's talking and how he's so smug about everything I'd say that the ogres are the kids and that orb he left them is keeping their minds Addled. "Villainy cackle activate!"
Or maybe he's going with a ritual sacrifice or something. Considering what he's accomplished thus far. I wouldn't put anything past the kid.

First off, he tries hiring respectable guild to kill the orges and clean up the loose ends hoping they find nothing fishy, and seems to be doing this because he was never hugged enough as child. He's dangerous, but sloppy.
