This car is seriously a fast death trap but it is FUN. It still needs seatbelts....that's pretty much the most deadly thing about it right now. Same power-to-weight ratio as a stock STi though :)

The shop is actually a friend's shop. I'm in the process of insulating my own garage so I can continue work by myself. As for the car, it has a roll cage and a stock 02 WRX engine and drivetrain in it; the engine was rebuilt 15k miles ago. The car also has a modest Borla muffler but a diameter upgrade and cat-delete are due soon.
The transmission already has 200k on it, it's basically just scrap value so if it shits itself, I'll just swap in something better. But for now, it's running and I don't care about it haha as long as I don't drop the clutch from redline, I should be fine. A friend of mine is sending 350hp through his 02 WRX transmission with no issue. He doesn't do clutch dumps though.
Actually I think the rear is open on the 02 WRX so it might have been just one side that lit up, but I can assure you that the entire car almost slid off the onramp; it's quick and once I swap in a limited slip, I have little doubt that I won't still be able to make the tires sing. My Legacy has a limited slip rear but I can't swap that in due to different final drive ratios.
Not sure about whp, whatever a stock WRX would make I guess. I still have to get the car weighed sometime, but the factory curb weight of the 98 Impreza coupe was 2,600 lbs. Most of the interior is gone including all the shit in the dash like the heater core, there's no AC compressor or ABS plumbing, the hood is aluminum instead of the stock steel sheet metal, and the custom bumper beam is significantly lighter than the 80-90 lb stock one. The car also has a lightweight pulley (if you want to imagine that doing much). I was told the cage doesn't add more than 100 lbs so I figure the car probably nets out around 2,500 lbs now. It'll be even better when I get my lightweight fiberglass racing seats installed. I can lift one of those seats with my pinky finger.
My friend is pretty good with fiberglass and we're planning on testing out our skills with laying carbon fiber panels. While the rally car was in pieces, we made a fiberglass mold of the roof in an attempt to later make a carbon fiber composite piece. Plexiglass windows are also in the cards eventually.

You only need an oven for certain types of epoxy/resin combinations, but it's possible to use other kinds that don't require heat; that's what we'll be using. They won't be as resistant to sudden shock (as most carbon fiber isn't anyway) but I don't plan on using these pieces for anything that will be close to the ground where it'll risk getting hit (bumper, side skirts, etc.) but I do plan on making a roof, door panels, quarter panels, and possibly a hood. Also going to use carbon fiber for a custom (very minimalistic) dashboard.
I was talking about my Legacy, which is heavier than a WRX or STi, MUCH less powerful, and I still beat them. This was way before I bought this Impreza coupe.
Point being, power isn't everything...but it sure helps! It's like when people say "I don't need alcohol to have a good time!" well you don't need matches or a lighter to start a fire but it makes things a hell of a lot easier.

It recently went back up to the cage builder for some refinements to the cage in order to bring it up to Rally America specs so it can be logbooked. Other than that, I'm getting some 4-1 unequal-length headers and catless up-pipe for when the car is back in my possession. I also have a version 4 JDM STi RA transmission coming my way too. It has a limited slip front differential and an electronic DCCD so I can control the front/rear power split on the fly.
All the basics for a beastly stage rally car :)
