Little Tales -- The Intangible
This comic reminds me of something I once read, allow me to share it with you:
Thirty spokes unite at the hub
but the ultimate use of the wheel depends on the part where nothing exists.
Clay is molded into a vessel
but the ultimate use of the vessel depends upon the part where nothing exists.
Doors and windows are cut out of the walls of a house
but the ultimate use of the house depends upon the parts where nothing exists.
So, there is advantage in using what can be seen, what exists.
And there is also advantage in using what cannot be seen, what is non-existent.
Tao Te Ching: Chapter 11
Don't forget that the true joy of the holiday season comes not from how much you can get, but how much you make people happy. And I say 'Make People Happy' instead of 'give' because some of the most beautiful gifts come from the heart. A kind word, deed, or a simple wish to a friend.
Tidings of peace and joy, my friends. Merry Christmas.

I was actually worried I was becoming too materialistic about the holidays because I was so excited about the gifts part, but it's what I was excited about - I'm excited for my big brother and my mother to open the gifts I gave them, because I love seeing them all happy and excited and smiling.
On top of that, the 18th was my boyfriend and my second anniversary and we just spent the day lazing around together, no gifts, no money, just...together.

For a while I let the apparent materialism of consumerism ruin Christmas for me. Watching those news stories about fights and riots over the last toy that everyone MUST have for one they are giving it too. Finally I realized I was ruining Christmas for myself. I still deplore such grabbiness but now I also understand it is an overzealous outlook on making one of their family happy though still on the materialistic side. The happiness of getting what you wished for as well as the happiness of the holiday, if felt, can be a wonderful combination. We just have to not make the material side of it the be all end all of things. Still I would rather those others read this comic and realize how far they have let it get out of hand and enjoy the holidays for the intangible you bring to light so beautifully.
