One of Bruce's biggest hurdles was the ability to communicate with other humans. The task of figuring out the language was difficult enough, but for Pokémon learning new things always came with a sacrifice. He didn't want to lose his fighting skills, so he struggled to avoid that fate. He eventually learned how to speak human language and still retain his fighting skills, which was a relief.

What was the cost? He could no longer speak in Pokémon language, severing his connections with fellow Pokémon in a big way...
