Call me crazy, but I see a subtle groove where the left eye meets the head. That's what makes it stand out to me.

You'll see it on medical uniforms and badges. As for what it means, Asclepius is in Greek mythology; he found a snake that was bit by another eat some herbs and live. From this he made medicine.
