In Need of Rest by Travis Anderson
Blood stained and matted his fur, the crimson liquid painting him like an upright corpse. The sharp pain from the arrow in his shoulder was left forgotten to the weight of his gore covered blades and the destruction around him. Vultures circled the still warm corpses, a few of the greedy carrion eaters picking at the slowly rotting flesh of the dead. One lone bird stared at the killer atop the remnants of a caravan cart. Its beady eyes looked over the ruby coated body of the lone figure, deciding if he was dead or not. The animal continued to watch, unsure but alert.
Fire ringed the decimation. The orange flames devoured all it could touch, its heat warming the blood that cooled on the Lion’s flesh. Surrounded by the dead and dying the warrior stood in silence, the crackling fire and shrill caws of death’s pets muffled to his numb ears. His eyes looked to nothing in the distance, glazed over with memory.
He was tired and far from home…
