the color scheme and the desert setting are excellent in this one- and I really dig the flowing movement of the car driving into the sunset...
I do wish you'd tell us more about this piece though- is there a back story to this and this character or did this just pop up in your mind as an image?

Yes. I usually make a rudimentary thumbnail sketch to base the finished piece off of, but I rarely use it as a template unless I'm working on something that requires constrained proportions, like a badge commission—with badges I can't be so free w/the scale of the picture's elements b/c I make them 4 ☓ 3 inches.
I try to visualize what sort of shapes would work best for each object, and in what order I should glue them. for example, the car here is based off a parallelogram-like shape. The parts of the car are just layered on top of each other to make the lights, the bumper, etc. and I later cut slits in the body to "insert" the wheels into the car. From there, I usually add or subtract pieces as I see fit, move the object, etc... I try not to be too rigid with my process.
