Old age and treachery against youth and skill...

In this scene, Dominara has just told Aries how much she admires her, how much she loves her and that the ancient order of assassins she belongs to wants Aries dead, but that she's going to 'save' her from damnation by using dark and twisted magic to keep Aries alive indefinetely, though immobile and minus her skin...
Naturally, even though the twisted, undying assassin is offering a form of salvation from the damnation she's doomed to, Aries tells her no.
And then the two do battle... Aries, the grandmaster swordswoman with the strength of three against an opponent with hundreds of lifetimes of experience at her disposal.
Aries eventually prevailed, but only through pushing herself past the limits of physical exhaustion.
Dominara fled, sobbing, asking again and again why Aries, with her sword, would refuse her. The assassin was, after all, ready to give up everything, the ancient order she had served for a thousand lifetimes and reincarnations, her matron, her comrades, and protect Aries from the Hellish fate in store for her.
Aries had no idea what to think. Her friend had turned out to be a Kalach-Cha Assassin, and a Neverdeath Nine no less!
She would have to feel whatever it is she must another day though, for now, she went back to her truck and trailer, washed her wounds, cleaned the dirt from her pelt and collapsed into bed, mourning the loss of a dear friend and dreading the enemy she'd just made...

By the description of what Dominarathough, it's an "immortality" as a trapped soul. Her soul would be safe from hell, but she wouldn't have any sort of life either.
As to other forms of immortality, well, those are hard enough to come by. But I suppose if you cannot truly die, than your soul could never go to hell.

Aye, it sort of reminded the Capn (prepare fer another massively obscure connection) to the game Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of the Flesh!
In that there's a character suspended in a hellish dimension as an immortal husk: a terrible existence, but to them it beat non-existance.
By the description it almost sounds like a nightmare Clive Barker would have O_o

Okay admittedly the Capn' is the same on both accounts (he never played it, but he did see an ad an watch Spoony's review XD)
But even so Ol'Squeaks is glad someone recalls that bizarre little 'anything-goes' time of FMV madness :)
Have ye ever watched any longplays of classic games on youtube? There was some WEIRD adventure games (The Drowned God, Obsidian, Angel Divine, Dark Seed 1 and 2, Harvester...)

Hey, thanks! ^_^
Well, and Starcraft, as fun and streamlined a strategy game as it is...
It was Shanghaid from Warhammer 40K for the most part. Right down to the fluff!
But at any rate, I've poured as much heart and soul into my characters as possible.
See, even the Kalach-Cha beleive they're doing good. It is their belief that order must be maintained by an ever-vigilant group, led by immortals who have the ancient wisdom at their disposal.
But over time, they grew... *numb* and dead inside. A soul is not meant to linger for that long.
Dominara however, was assigned to watch Aries, suspecting her to be the lost heir of DeLaVega and witnessed Aries' act of selflessness when she plunged into Hell.
It re-inspired Dominara's faith in people and for as long as she could, she stalled the Kalach-Cha's investigation of her. But when she could no longer, she approached Aries and befriended her, keeping her from the eye of the Kalach-Cha.
But the piper eventually had to be paid and she confessed her growing love for Aries.
Aries was on the fence, and in desperation, Dominara told her everything... Who she was, what she wanted and the key to saving Aries' soul from Hell as Dominara saw it.
Aries, disgusted and repulsed, told her where to stick it. Wounded in heart, the immortal drew her weapons and attacked Aries, putting the thousands of lifetimes of experience to use.
Aries defended herself if only just, and escaped Dominara, having to flee from her once-friend.
Dominara, heartbroken, lost her will to continue serving the Kalach-Cha and fell adrift to the winds, only once in a while watching Aries' exploits form the shadows with sorrowful eyes.

The Capn' hopes yer compilin these ideas in a centralized 'bible' of sorts!
Aries he's continually impressed as FAR FAR FAR more then a fetish icon (as some seem to think) or even as an archetypical hard bitten merc. Her tale, her personality, her history all has a lot of depth an nuance :)
Ye almost have a Dante's Inferno idea at play ere too: the fallibility of mankind (an other sentients) stemmin from misuse of free-will an clingin to the mortal coil. Aries is self sufficient but even though death means clear damnation she values her life less then an eternity of a broken existence. She's rather die on her feet then live on her knees.
Ol'Squeaks also finds the idea of a defeated enemy watchin over future exploits very original an compellin O_o

Well yeah. Dominara had nowhere to go. She had already made her intentions clear to the rest of the Kalach-Cha and she was no longer counted among them.
Of course she still has access to all the ancient weapon, money and resource caches scattered all around Spira along with safe-houses and a number of special items.
But she's been severed from the Kalach-Cha and now they face a debacle... They know what's going on in her heart. They know that if they manage to find and kill Aries, which they most assuredly could do if the other eight of the Neverdeath Nine converged on her, then Dominara would have nothing at all holding her back from bringing them to ruin. So they need to find and kill Dominara first and stop her cycle of rebirth to boot.
So Dominara knows as long as she draws breath, the Kalach-Cha won't touch Aries. So she watches her, lending her bits of aid from time to time, hoping to bring Aries around, but every time Aries refuses. As you said, she would sooner die on her feet than serve on her knees, eternal damnation or not.
And at one point in her life, she realized that there would be no breaking the chains. And when she accepted that and was at last comfortable with it, then she became less of a woman and more of a *force* unto herself. A one-woman sovereign nation to which all others pay respect, begrudging or not, all living under the cardinal rule of not screwing with her.
Of course that's about the same time she spent ten years living a normal life, having disguised herself.
When her past caught up with her though, her son and daughter bore witness to the stuff of nightmares as their mother unleashed a Hell on Spira against the men who had come for her...

Yeah. Sheer force of will.
Dominara had lost her passion for the mission of the Kalach-Cha, but when she saw what Aries did in Hell, it put a fire in her belly again.
In the fight, Aries endured the assault, but could never get a cut in.
She waited for a good opening and took the opportunity to run because she knew she couldn't outlast Dominara.

She cannot. The reason she survived Hell in the first place is because she was *alive*. Not a naked soul unbound.
No mortal was ever meant to walk in Hell, so though it burned, though she was attacked by those that tormented the damned, she was not *too* physically harmed.
She escaped with the soul, wresting it from its place in Hell, and returned to the mortal world *scarred* in mind, body and soul.
There's no stopping the damnation, which is why Aries eventually just accepted it, determined to restore her family honor and position, to leave progeny and a legacy since she knew exactly where she's going, having seen it all first-hand.

When I think of Aries escaping Hell, this song always come to my head: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI5PvewI1bA
That isn't to say there are forces at work trying to save her soul, ESPECIALLY after learning she'd stopped trying to find a way herself.
Their reasoning?
She found a way to break into Hell.
That was supposed to be impossible.
Saving her soul from Hell is also 'impossible'....
Though yes, as far as she's concerned, she's accepted her eventual damnation and that only *strengthened* an already iron will.
She cut so deeply into Spira's worldwide culture that centuries later, she was still regarded with fear, like some kind of punishing bogeywoman who would appear in a streak of white fire to destroy the wicked.
And the biography the five students made became the definitive work on her.

And actually yeah, it is tragic.
Speaking of tragedies...
I was inspired by the Labours of Hercules when I wrote that aspect of Aries' life. He too plunged into the underworld to save damned souls. He could only save one of his two friends who were stuck there. Charon, the Ferryman of the River Styx, allowed Hercules passage without paying, afraid of the powerful mortal.
It was under similar circumstances that Aries managed to get into Hell. And like Hercules, the task was not finished as expected.
At any rate... Aries would be open to the possibility of salvation, but in her mind, her precious time would be better spent with her own agenda.

They weren't after Aries. They were after the entire DeLaVega family. It was the mad king, Deimos, who ordered them, having been originally as wise and noble as his ancestors, but something went wrong with his mind and out of the blue he decreed war upon Rora during a council meeting. Oriana DeLaVega, Duchess of the 13th House and Elizabeth DeLaVega's (Aries) mother, spoke against such an act.
In an act of lunacy, Deimos ordered his black squad to incite a flash mob made up of the lowest of the low, the envious, the clingers and walked with them to destroy Citadel DeLaVega and all the family. Alas, the DeLaVega soldiers were not there to defend their home, as they had all been put on outward patrol assignment by King Deimos just the day prior.
One of the housekeepers, Edna, in spite of a bullet wound to her shoulder, carried young Elizabeth away from the burning citadel, away from where her parents, the Duchess and her husband had been hanged.
Elizabeth's name was changed to Aries Passadar after that.
Deimos convened another council and said it was a dreadful shame that the DeLaVegas were extinguished. That anyone who suggests war with Rora is foolish come to a similar fate would also be a shame.
The council of nobles from the twelve remaining Houses quietly conspired to have Deimos assassinated. Deimos died in his sleep and it was determined to be natural causes. The council decided that in order to preserve the integrity of the monarchy, his horrific crime should never be known. He was whitewashed and the black squad were executed, the Rhinehart Intelligence Agency putting out a spin that it was a splinter radical sect of Roran extremists who were not affiliated with the Roran autocracy.
They found a distant cousin of Deimos' working as a historical archivist in a small Rhinehart territory city, named Guelemar and made her queen. She would go on to lead Volencia well and kindly.

DeLaVega aye? Bit of a Zorro tribute? ;)
Yer channelin Christopher Nolan with the idea of a localized flash mob: a real tactic often used by dictators.
Was Deimos (given his name it's more then likely) possessed perhaps? Magic seems to be real in Aries' universe.
Ol'Squeaks loves all this intrigue ^_^
Out of curiocity another question!
What style would ye ideally see this tale take shape in?
-Graphic novella
-Live action (Avatar showed ye can have anthros as main characters with CGI, an makeup could work too!)
-Computer generated
-Western animation (Don Bluth, Heavy Metal...etc)
-Anime?

If I could get Don Bluth to work on this...
Hoooo....
I would be one happy wolf.
And yeah, magic is real in Aries' universe. You need two things though... First you need a Creation Stream, a current of energy that lanced out from the birth of the universe, reaching through time and space and being channeled by the souls they touch.
Second, you need training in order to use your Creation Stream.
Just for the record, Aries does not have a Creation Stream.
And Deimos wasn't possessed, but there was demonic involvement. Faustian persuasion.
Heh, and yes, you found me out with the Zorro angle ;)

Aye, somethin like Titan AE would be really cool to see again ^^
Oh so? Did Deimos run afoul of an artifact or did he summon somethin bigger then his head?
Hey: imitation is the mother of invention XD
Does the political system come into play fer Lone Candle? It's interestin to know the queen is newly appointed an that the power structure ties directly into Aries' past.

Both Aries and Guelemar are ignorant to all those deeper dealings. Guelemar was simply told she was the last heir of the Royal House, which was true, but they didn't tell her what led to her meteoric rise.
But the political intrigue is given its proper attention!
As for Deimos, he was given a cursed ring as a gift. It did nothing more than fiddle with his brain chemistry in much the way syphilis does.

Does her neophyte status lead to the queen makin different decisions then a veteran ruler, or does she have powers behind the throne to keep her in line?
A cursed ring as a gift? Did Deimos have a magic usin enemy?
(Maybe Deimos isn't a huge part of the overall tale, but his brief part to play is mysterious)

Deimos was given the ring as a gift from an affluent Roran, who bought it from a street vendor, not knowing the ring has a secret history of being an assassin's tool of killing leaders. The ring kills its victim slowly, but making them lose their mind over the course of a year so the individual becomes so maddened that they are either dead by their fellows' hands or simply die from stress.
As for Guelemar, she took charge admirably and her knowledge of history gave her a good perspective on how to keep the country well.

I mean, only these sycophants would be upset about businesses being allowed to hire outside of Unions.
Because... when a business has that choice, they'll take non-Union over Union any day, not because they want to be able to mistreat that worker (Since this is the information age and smartphones are everywhere) but because they can hire three non-union workers for the cost of one Union worker.

Calbeck on FA ere (a fine artist hisself) recently discovered that even ifn the union promises you a huge benefits package, vacation days, an a massive salary yer company will still downsize ye ifn they can't afford it.
The unions are jus unhappy they couldn' manage to achieve their dream of hirin constituents to do nothin an get paid anyway ^^;

I still hold that the election was rigged *against* the will of the people.
Many districts had ZERO Romney votes. That's statistically as likely as a tornado moving through a junkyard and assembling a fully functioning Harvey Davidson. And MILLIONS of Romney votes, according to exit poll data just vanished!
And the worst part of all... The military overseas were outright DENIED their right to vote by this administration.
And people wonder why I get so bloody pissed off on my DA journals >_>

Don't believe I've ever seen it.
There's a book series called the Night's Dawn Trilogy I think you'd be interested in. Very original sci-fi universe!
The first book is called (Reference drop in three... two...) The Reality Dysfunction, the second book is called The Neutronium Alchemist and the third is called The Naked God.
It's about humanity in the 26th Century, having made contact with several alien species and splitting into two unique, but not hostile philosophies. There's the Edenists who live on gigantic living habitats and fly in living starships and have a genetic trait called The Affinity Gene that was engineered by Edenism's founder that allows telepathy. What it also allows is for a complete personality 'download' into the Neural Strata of a habitat to keep their experience and knowledge alive and well. and so they can 'continue living on' in the neural strata. Then there's the Adamists, who use extensive nanotechnology in their personal lives and in their starships, which rather than use swallow maneuvers to create wormholes the way Edenist ships do, they use a special FTL drive. Adamists are also opposed to the idea of living the way Edenists do, but both ways of life are symbiotic.
A young Adamist named Joshua Calvert who makes a living exploring an ancient alien habitat stumbles across a data log that speaks of the horrific, mysterious event that caused their extinction they referred to as 'The Reality Dysfunction', and that 'the dead returned'. Naturally he assumed it was just a reaction to whatever else did it, but...
The eponymous Reality Dysnfunction occurs when, I shit thee not, a Satanist sect made up of indentured criminal servants on a colony planet called Lalonde conduct a ritual that opens a portal into *BLEEP* and the souls of the damned spill forth to possess the living and spread the possession.
The books follow a fascinating assortment of characters , heroes and villains, and the struggles they all go through.
The ending is a *wee* disappointing, but not outright *bad*.

PC, with PS2 in a close second and Nintendo-64 tied with that. There've been some nice Wii titles, but nothing that really grabbed me.
N-64 brought Starfox, Goldeneye, Banjo-Kazooie and more and they're still great games today.
I have a steam account if you want to friend me there! Zucca101 is my handle.

Yeah, but Dominara's solution is to basically turn her into a statue. You ever heard of Body Worlds? The plastisization of actual human bodies and put on display for anatomical education?
It's a process just like that.
Dominara thinks it's better than eternal damnation since she would tend the grotesque statue forever.
But Aries would rather live and die on her own terms, even if losing herself to Hell is the only option.

Yup. It's one of the facets of Aries that looms over her. Mephistasm, the demon who holds the chain, doesn't want it so any more than Aries does. He's one of the elder demons and the situation fell in his lap. When she broke into Hell, he informed her that the soul delivered to him without his knowing had to stay there, as mortal rites were keeping it there. So she swapped, permitting Mephistasm to chain her own soul, to be claimed upon her death, taking back the soul wrongfully taken and dropped into Mephistasm's care.
Mephistasm *wants* her to succeed, since as he put it, his task is to punish the wicked. So he infused her, through the chains, with a tripling of her natural strength, an immunity to heat and flame and a channeling of Hellfire.
This also manifested as the marks of damnation burned into her hide.

She would be conscious alright...
The worse part? The only way to keep her matron from pursuing them would be to give the Kalach-Cha matron what she wants.
Aries' hide.
So she would skin her, tan Aries' hide, send it to the matron and then plasticize Aries with the dark arts.
It's comparatively not as bad as eternal damnation, but it's right up there...

Skinned alive (and quite likely awake the whole time), carefully kept alive, and then preserved as a statue of flesh with your mind and senses intact. Yeah...that'd be a living hell. Granted, I get the feeling Dominara would keep her company when she could, but even a will as strong as Aries could only hold off insanity for so long.
That's the crux, but one does not simply become immortal.
The Neverdeath Nine cheat death in an interesting way. Their souls and minds come back through reincarnation.
Every time they're born again, they retain all knowledge, all experience and all agenda and cunning.
At age ten, they vanish from their household, find their weapons and money caches, and continue their work.

Sort of. Only no surgery involved, and the only way to make it work is to kill ten people each lifetime and use their souls to power the reincarnation.
The souls used simply cease to exist having been burned up. It's an act of abomination that even Hell itself would never do.
Think about that... these Neverdeath Nine have lived for *thousands* of years...

Don' know ifn yer sick of this thread. Ol'Squeaks in his bizarre travels came across this song an he thought the lyrics (apart from some specifics obvious) fit Aries nicely XD

Thank you ^_^
Yeah, it was *never* enough for me growing up when a villain was a villain for villany's sake.
I would construct more elaborate scenarios in my head...
Snerel Sneer set off to build an empire but fell to corruption along the way, Megatron was a patriot trying to bring equality back to Predacons, Evans was trying to silence the voices of all mortals in the world that filled his head, driving him to madness and so on.
