He was unstable since he left Cybertron. He witnessed his only friend(at that time) die. The blow to him damage his systems, so in turn when he gets angry, he pretty much goes into a uncontrollable rage- which he's killed many. And that stayed with him, it still haunts him even now. He's afraid of himself. There's also the fact that he's emotionally confused and hurt over 2 of his friends fighting over him, and not considering his feelings; a friend lied to him, said that his affection meant nothing to him. He told him to forget about him and to not care, but Pyre's not like that- so he wanted to help him. He wanted his friend to open up to him, to understand his pain- to become closer to him. But his friend refused- he's just-- broken.
He can't smile, he wants to kill himself-- but he can't. Because he has other friends that love him, and he cares about them, and wouldn't want to hurt them. So he tries his hardest to keep going- for them.
